The Tsuga Gallery is establishing an art scholarship fund. This will be in memorial to gallery member David Goodroe who recently lost his battle with cancer. The fund will help provide education in the field of visual arts to local art students. The gallery will hold a raffle to start the fund. If all goes according to plan, movies will be shown in Cathlamet beginning December 17 at 7 p.m. Details are being finalized for the Community Center, 101 Main St., to be the venue for regular showing of movies on their large LCD screen. The Cathlamet Public Library will sponsor this program and hold the license necessary to show copyrighted films from many production studios, both American and foreign. COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Rodney Kenneth Prestegard 74, died on November 17th at home on Puget Island surrounded by family. He was born in Cathlamet on June 17, 1941 to Kenneth and Thelma (Jacobsen) Prestegard. He attended school on Puget Island and Cathlamet. In 1959 Rod joined the Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Bridget. In 1962 after his discharge he came home to Cathlamet. He loved his commercial fishing years on the Columbia River, Bristol Bay and Cordova, Alaska where he fished for 25 years. He married Judy on April 12, 1986 and she survives him at home. Rod...
The Warriors for Well-Being Elective class at John C. Thomas Middle School has raised close to $300 for Thanksgiving dinners for the community by doing a Kiss the Donkey contest. The contest took place today (Wednesday.) Members of the Cathlamet Town Council heard reports and discussed a variety of issues when they met Monday. During the public comment time, Tom Merz raised concerns about the health of the Cathlamet Fire Department and its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division. Merz, an emergency medical technician and former member of the department, said the number of EMT's has declined, and there are no paramedics in the department even though some reside in the area. Commissioners approved the 2016 budget and rates and a one percent increase in property tax revenue last Thursday at the Port 1 Commissioner meetings. They also heard about possible plans for the sewer lagoons. Mayor Dale Jacobson was in attendance to talk about the land that had been the sewer lagoons. To The Eagle: As was reported in last week’s Eagle, the community garden contributed 1540 pounds of fresh seasonal produce to the food banks. We estimated that in the six plus months growing season, about 720 distributions were made to families who needed food, particularly garden fresh vegetables. This represents about 25 percent of the population of the county. Gardens always have ongoing expenses like soil and amendments, seed and integrated pest control. Winners of this year's Wahkiakum Museum Boat Raffle were Cristina and Jason Lefler of Cathlamet, shown above with Judy Brawn, Historical Society board president, at the presentation ceremony at the museum last week.
