TOASTY--We were back to sunny weather last weekend and several days before and after that, so I hope you had plenty of sunscreen handy! If you happened to stay at Skamokawa Vista Park this weekend, the windy conditions made for perfect kite flying opportunities. The newly installed power and water spaces along the riverfront area were being taken advantage of as well, so they were definitely a great addition to the park. Karen E. Costa, 71, passed away June 2, 2015 after a brief hospitalization at OHSU in Portland. She was born in Denver, Colo., on January 13, 1944. Being raised in Austin, Minn., she graduated from Pacelli High School in 1962. Karen was fortunate enough to have realized her childhood dreams of working in the travel industry and having the ability to travel the world over. Luckily, the sun came out for the 10th Annual Rods and Reels Rod Run at the fairgrounds in Skamokawa on Saturday as locals joined tourists in what was not only a showcase for cars and trucks and motorcycles, but a social event for enthusiasts. How to increase revenue and what to do with it turned into a hot topic at Tuesday's meeting of the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Mike Backman reported he wants to ask voters to approve a property tax levy to fund entities such as the county fair which have few revenue sources. The electric crew was on hand as Tuesday’s Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioner’s meeting opened to join the commissioners in congratulating PUD employee Kevin Vik on his promotion to journeyman lineman. If you've seen the mural on the brewery at the marina, then you are familiar with artist Jade Lewis' work. Lewis, along with his wife Donna, who opened the music studio, are newcomers to Cathlamet and have quickly settled in, making friends and sharing their gifts. "We just fell in love with this place," Lewis said. "It's a sacrifice because I still have to drive back and forth to Portland each day. Wahkiakum County officials will hold two special meetings to gather public comment on a proposed solid waste nuisance ordinance. The first meeting will be next Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., at the Grays River Valley Center in Rosburg. Members of the Cathlamet town council discussed a variety of projects when they met May 18. The council did approve a 10 percent increase in fees for using the municipal swimming pool. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank, a former pool manager, said the increases were the first in at least four years. The increases will boost locker room only admission from $1 to $1.10; child and senior citizens from $2.50 to $2.75; adults, from $3 to $3.30, and families from $10 to $11.
