JUST RIGHT--Once we got over a wild couple of days last week with thunder and lightning and pouring down rain, it wasn't too bad, albeit a bit muggy now and then. This week started out with some rain threats but forecasters can't quite make up their minds about that, so who knows what we'll really see coming by the end of the week. Please don't be fooled by the rain we had, as there is still a burn ban in effect and fines have been doled out for illegal camp fires or trash fires recently, so when in doubt, call authorities. FAIR IS DONE--Once...
Skateboarders from the Pacific Northwest and different points in the US, a European and a South American traveled to Cathlamet to compete and socialize at the sixth annual Downhill Corral during one of the hotter weekends in memory. Rising temperatures, a touch of humidity and an unforgiving sun made the hours on the asphalt a trial, unless you were riding. There were rumors of Germans and Australians as well. Tibault Parise came all the way from France. "I'm from Nice, which is nice," he said....

Craig Brown was tracking down the hay used for the Downhill Corral last weekend. It would...

WAS TOASTY--As the work week began, we were feeling mighty warm, as temperatures were still up in the 80's Sunday evening and were up in the mid-90's on Monday so it was pretty miserable I thought. In West Valley, we were still very hot Monday evening with no relief from any wind, while down at the fairgrounds, the wind was blowing and it must have been 15 to 20 degrees cooler, so a big discrepancy in just a couple of miles. And then there was Tuesday morning, wow, what a thunder and lightning storm that was! I was very glad to see it end, as...

To The Eagle: On August 6, 2014, I received a phone call from Sheriff Mark Howie. He told me he didn’t want me in the Sheriff’s office any more. I had stopped at the window (the day before) after dropping off my ballot at the Auditor’s office and had a brief conversation with the corrections officers. He told me he was told I was in the office and he didn’t want me there anymore. It was a very unpleasant conversation. Sheriff Howie has decided I am special and he has to call me at home to harass and threaten me, at least I perceived it as such...

STILL TOASTY--As we go through this first week in August, it's still pretty toasty! However, we have been quite a bit cooler than other areas where upper 90's and triple digits have been closer to the norm. As Monday evening came to a close and bedtime was upon us, it was a very nice 60 degrees here while Portland was still at 91 degrees and very muggy, so it was a great time to be here in Skamokawa! TOASTY--The weekend was quite warm and temperatures are supposed to stay that way, so we hope you're staying lathered with sunscreen and drinking plenty of fluids. Don't forget your four-legged friends, as they are already wearing fur coats. It goes without saying that one should be extra careful with fires and BBQ's and even a hanging chain between your truck and boat/trailer as you could set off a fire unintentionally and as we can see, there have been some devastating consequences in our state with wild fires raging out of control. SPECIAL...
