“So, you’re the new DeEtta,” a customer said Tuesday as he slid into the barber chair at the Cathlamet Barber Shop. “I should probably look in the mirror so I can show you how DeEtta did it,” he said. The new barber, Christeena Bassi, said she is enjoying getting to know the customers who received haircuts from DeEtta Funderburg for a decade. At the end of June, Bassi, who is 30, completed the yearlong course of study for a cosmetology license, and has purchased the Cathlamet Barber Shop from Funderburg. The barbershop, a landmark on Main Stre...
This summer, 26 children participated in the summer reading program. Nineteen of those received certificates for having read 10 or more books. Children who participated in the Cathlamet’s summer reading program, heard about an American’s trip to Africa, sat in a pretend aircraft for trips abroad, and learned about India. The theme of the Collaborative Summer Library Program provided by the Washington State Library Association was One World, Many Stories and focused on travel and different cultures. Community volunteers gave presentations and...
Pictured in this photo from the collection of the Wahkiakum County Historical Museum, a pile driver works on a pier for construction of the PI bridge in 1939. The Cathlamet-Puget Island Bridge was dedicated during a celebration August 26-27 in 1939. The bridge provides a vital link in area transportation. The bridge connects to the Ferry Wahkiakum via SR 409 during closures of SR 4 and is a tourist attraction or an aid to commuters at other times. Travelers monitor an osprey nest for activity...
To The Eagle: I am writing in response to the recent article regarding another allegation against the Cathlamet Fire Department by Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz. For over 20 years, I have been a volunteer EMT and have always been proud to serve in an organization responsible for saving lives and property in Wahkiakum County. Beyond the approximately 500 calls a year is a long list of state and federal requirements and continual maintenance to be ready at a moment's notice to go into action. Volunteers spend countless hours each month in trai...

Newspapers like to get letters to the editor. They represent the diverse points of view in our community, and they're often informative. Writers will take on public officials, who by the nature of their elected position, are subject to criticism that goes beyond the limits normally given to private citizens. This week, we received three letters on Tuesday, one past deadline, criticizing Mayor George Wehrfritz and his handling of Cathlamet Fire Department business. Specifically, writers focused on a grant the department solicited from the...
I don’t know about you but the warm rain was quite refreshing at the beginning of this week. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sunshine, but when it gets above 80, it’s too hot. That was one of the many reasons to leave California. The farmers making hay probably didn’t appreciate the rain much as many of them are still trying to get the bales into the barns, and there are still quite a few bales in the fields. It looks like more good weather on the way though, at least through the weekend. News from Naselle: One more week until school begins...
Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz has called for an investigation of a Cathlamet Fire Department mission. In July, Wehrfritz reported that members of the Cathlamet Volunteer Fire Fighters Association had applied in 2010 as a private business for a fire fighting contract with the US Forest Service and taken the department's wildlands unit to Prineville, Ore., for an inspection. They charged the fuel expense to the town's Emergency Services Fund (EMS), which covers ambulance expenses, not fire fighting expenses. At Monday's monthly meeting of the...
Got Steam? The Northwest Steam Society bumper sticker says it all. The group--home to a steam donkey, a calliope, remote controlled model steam boats, and vessels of all configurations--held its annual meet at the Elochoman Marina last weekend. The club has 275 members, most from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. The group rotates annual meets throughout the region. Lew Parsons of Hoodsport brought a larger than life steam donkey, permanently mounted to a lowboy trailer. It sat in the parking lot at the marina drawing loggers and others...
The Cathlamet Town Council approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the town's zoning laws on Monday, but council members had so many questions that it was suggested they bring in a consultant to handle the process. In other business at their monthly meeting: --The council met in an executive session called by Mayor George Wehrfritz to discuss potential litigation; --The council approved a parking and design plan for the 2nd Street renovation project; --The council discussed harvesting town timber to help cover the town's match for...
To The Eagle: It appears that the "surge" is working. The shock troops that we sent to Washington D.C. last November to fight against President Obama's War on Prosperity managed to make some gains in the deficit and health care battles while keeping the tax monster under control. Not bad considering that our invading troops only nominally control one half of one of the three branches of the Empire. Most observers and tacticians agree that real significant gains will have to wait until next year when we can replace the chief executive and...
To The Eagle: In last week's Eagle, Trudy Fredrickson submitted a letter entitled Land Trust Not Our Friend. She was commenting on the Kandoll Road CLT project where they finally succeeded in forcing landowner Raven Webb to sell her property. I was also sad to see Raven leave. But this is only the beginning. In a recent county commissioners meeting, Mr. Dan Friesz of Columbia Land Trust admitted he was wrong on an issue regarding CLT's Indian Jack Slough, formally known as the Nelson Creek project. In 2010, he said that the project would have...

SUMMER?--Last week was a mixed bag of weather but for a good deal of it, the theme was gray! We've had the sea fog and misty conditions for several mornings so it hasn't looked too much like summer until the latter part of the day when the sun finally shows up. While Portland was boasting temperatures close to 80 with clear skies, we were basking in the 60's with lots of clouds; however, it was muggy so it felt warmer than it looked. This has not been so great for hay makers or painters, as this kind of weather just makes everything steam; not...

Cathlamet resident, Janet Cimino, 67, passed away August 4, 2011 at Community Hospice. She was born June 29, 1944 in Chehalis, WA to G.R. and Mildred (Swanson) Kerstetter. Janet graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1962, studied a year at Washington State University and received her teaching degree from Western Washington State University in Bellingham in 1968. That same year she married Noel “Scotty” Cimino; he preceded her in death in 1992. Janet returned to Cathlamet in 1996 from Bainbridge Island, and earlier lived in Port Angeles and...
Eleanor R. Elliott, 93, a resident of Wahkiakum county the past 73 years, died in Cathlamet, on August 2, 2011. The daughter of Robert and Ethel (Collins) Tomlinson, she was born February 20, 1918 in Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada. Eleanor was a graduate of the Bellingham Normal School (now Western Washington University) where she earned her teaching certificate in 1938. Upon graduation Eleanor accepted a position to teaching grades 1 through 8 at a one room school house at Elliott Point, located along the shores of the Columbia River...
Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz gave his predecessor, Mayor Dick Swart, credit for success in funding a new wastewater treatment plant for Cathlamet during a celebration Tuesday marking receipt of a $7,483,000 check, representing an approximately $2.5 million grant and $5 million loan package from United States Department of Agriculture. Wehrfritz read a message from the former mayor who was at the dentist in Astoria during the presentation. The sewer plant will move onto land purchased from the Wahkiakum School District across SR 4 and will...
The Northwest Steam Society will hold its Annual Steam Meeting August 12-14 at Cathlamet's Elochoman Slough Marina, drawing steam engine enthusiasts and their machines from all over the Pacific Northwest. The annual meeting, held each August at a different location, will feature 17 steam launches holding activities around the marina and on Puget Island. It includes a Friday evening social and a banquet on Saturday evening. Boats will arrive Friday. At noon on Saturday, they'll parade from the marina to Puget Island and cruise up Birnie Slough...
Cathlamet Fire Department officers have responded to queries from Mayor George Wehrfritz about the operation of the department's wildland truck and its travel out of state. Wehrfritz voiced concerns about the truck and its use by department members at the July 18 meeting of the council. He said the unit had undertaken unauthorized missions while operating as a private business, that the unit was deployed out of state without permission, and that it appeared Emergency Medical System (the first aid and ambulance division of the department) funds...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized Health and Human Services staff to begin looking for a potential site for 16-20 units of new housing accessible to county residents with disabilities and/or low incomes. A group known as the Wahkiakum Continuity of Care Housing Group will begin looking for a site and is authorized to enter into non-binding negotiations that would secure the site for future use. The county formed the housing group in 2007 and charged it with advising the commission on use of Affordable Housing and Homeless...
Melissa Wong will soon be leaving the community garden in Cathlamet’s Erickson Park to study Culinary Arts in Portland, but the work she’s begun to engage children should continue to bear fruit. Wong, who is 23, attended the University of California at Davis and has a degree in Food Science and Sustainable Agriculture. “I surround myself with food,” she said, laughing. “As soon as I saw the job (in Cathlamet) I was interested,” Wong said. She is an Americorps volunteer working 32-hours a week to increase healthy food consumption among Women...
ANOTHER MONTH--We're into the 8th month of the year already! We started this one off with a dandy day, as it was sunny and hot and felt like summer. Except for the night and early mornings hours; then it felt like crisp fall air was descending upon us. We'll hope we have a decent month ahead so folks can get their hay in and enjoy the many upcoming events this month. GOT LUCKY!--I was happy that we got so lucky on Saturday to have a nice sunny day for everyone at the Skamokawa Vista Park's Vendors Market--the very first one! I don't think we...
