Flooded in again! It wasn’t too bad until Sunday and we couldn’t get any of the vehicles out. The ducks are in heaven though. Our dogs have discovered that if they wade into the water under the trees, they can pick the mice out of the lower branches and have a snack. Of course sometimes you have to share with the other dogs. News from Naselle: The Naselle Drama Club will host a Musical Variety Show on Friday at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door to help defray some of the Drama Club costs. Enjoy a fun filled evening of family ent...

Kuldip Vaid calls Skyline Golf Course and Driving Range the emerald jewel of Cathlamet. The course’s new operator says he fell in love with it when he first saw it last March. “It clicked the first time,” said Vaid, who was living in Beaverton when he learned about it on Craig’s List. Vaid’s enthusiasm for the course is palpable. “There’s a different view from each of the holes,” he said. The view from the club house across Puget Island to the ridges in Oregon is stellar. Vaid has a 25-year lease and has learned the daily maintenance the course...
Facing possible law suits over application of ordinances, the Cathlamet town council on Monday rescinded a motion it passed in December regarding sewer service fees for the park model cabins at the Elochoman Slough Marina. Council members voted to amend the ordinance which sets the fees to include new forms of transient housing such as motels, bed and breakfasts, and the park models. The existing ordinance contains no definition of motels or park models, and council members in December felt they had to assess fees as if the cabins were for...

STILL COLD--Wow, we've had some nippy nights in West Valley but we certainly love the clear, sunny days that have often accompanied them. Our first day of the new year was mostly cloudy and I was fearing snow, but thankfully we didn't get any of that. I'd like it to warm up a bit, but as long as we're not suffering any horrific damages to anything, the frosty mornings and blue skies are looking pretty good right now. However, it sounds like we may be in for some changes so let's hope we don't slip and slide on freezing rain or wind up with a...

Longtime Cathlamet resident, Arlene I. Lawson, 89, passed away January 4, 2011 at Columbia View Care Center. She was born November 3, 1921 in Trenton, NE to Emil F. and Paulina (Hedke) Stienke. She married Jack Lawson in 1935 and together they moved to Cathlamet; he preceded her in death in 1997. Arlene was a member of Cathlamet Assembly of God Church. She worked at Columbia View Care Center for 25 years as a nurse’s aid. She was devoted to her family. In her later years, Arlene’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the focus of her eve...
The Skamokawa Town Center, whose existence has been up and down since it was extensively remodeled in 1994, has sold. Wahkiakum County records indicate that Don Jester of Rochester bought the property in a cash sale for $575,000 in December. The property had been part of bankruptcy proceedings in 2009. The new owner plans to rehabilitate the buildings, and has hired a professional to survey the area and re-stock the store, said David Nelson of Cathlamet Realty West, who handled the sale. Nelson said Jester planned to have family members live...
Local realtors are looking for the bottom of the housing boom-to-bust cycle that grips the nation. Foreclosures are driving down the price of homes in Wahkiakum County and financing is unpredictable. “Seems like we’re waiting for what we hope is going to be the bottom,” said Stephanie Prestegard of Lower Columbia Realty. Newly elected Wahkiakum County Assessor Bill Coons said the real estate market is still declining. “Foreclosures are putting a lot of pressure on private sales,” he said Monday, his first day as county assessor. “Some peo...
When photographer Judy VanderMaten of the Broadway Gallery saw Becky Ledtke’s jewelry, she arranged for Ledtke to be featured at the gallery in Longview in January. Ledtke’s gemstone necklaces are substantial and dramatic with origins across the globe. The owner of Heavy Stone Jewelry, Ledtke raised cattle for 25 years in Skamokawa. “I wanted to do something to make staying home more fun, since beef cattle ranchers don’t get vacations too much,” she said. She started by buying beads and stones and she “figured out what people like to wear.” Led...
The Cathlamet Town Council wrapped up its budget preparation for 2011 with a special meeting last week. Three major issues remained to be settled, Mayor George Wehrfritz said at the start of the meeting--library staffing, a contribution, if any, to the successor of the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council, and the budgets for the fire department and emergency services. Council members left their regular monthly meeting December 20 unsettled on how to set funding for library programs. They were considering reducing the salary of...
In a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners agreed Tuesday to contract with the merged Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Lower Columbia Economic Development Council (EDC). The two organizations are merging this year as state funding for EDCs is drying up. Commissioners Lisa Marsyla and Dan Cothren voted to make a $25,000 appropriation; Commissioner Blair Brady voted against it. The funds come from the state and are specifically set to be used by a county's economic development organization, selected by the county commission. Brady suggested t...
To The Eagle: First of all, ask Oliver and Irene Bacon about the history of my folks and me in Cathlamet. Irene took care of me in 1948-49 when my folks taught at Wahkiakum High School. We lived on Puget Island again in 1956-58 when they again taught at the high school. I was in the fourth and fifth grades and had a rowboat on Birnie Slough. Seems like I've written this to you before. Pardon if I have senior moments. Please do all you can to support the Veteran's Administration. They've done well by me. I lived in Cathlamet and volunteered for...
