Council members approved a draft memorandum of understanding, and Town Attorney Tom Doumit said he would pass it to county officials for their approval. Guest said she wants to start tilling...

To The Eagle: Thank you, Leon and Linda Gollersrud for encouraging the local people to speak up on Steve McClain's behalf. I guess we're all waiting for an explanation from the commissioners for their reasoning in firing him. I guess that is not going to happen. As previous business owners, we were very much aware of the extra revenue Steve helped to bring to our community. We also remember when he was first employed at the park, there was nothing there. Steve has helped to make Vista Park a fun and thriving place where people love to come. He...

To The Eagle: Most people have difficulty visualizing the size of the national debt. As of today, it stands at 12.56 trillion dollars. Lately I have been trying to think of some way to illustrate that number in a way that local folks might be able to relate to. I thought perhaps most of us can visualize how big Puget Island is. There are places on the mainland that offer a vantage point for a pretty good view. Suppose we placed eight $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes on every square foot of Puget Island, including Little Island. That would be...

It’s certainly hard to figure out what Mother Nature has been trying to tell us for the last week or so. One day we have shirtsleeve weather and the next is snow flurries, lightning, thunder, hail, wind and long underwear. It looks like a not so nice forecast for the next few days. News from Naselle: It looks like Barb Swanson’s music class had a rare treat on February 26. Local musician, Wilho Saari brought his 16 string Kantele to introduce to the Elementary Music students. He played familiar melodies for them and allowed the students to ask...

To The Eagle: In last week's paper, Richard Erickson was reported as stating that people who buy waterfront property across from the Wauna paper mill do not mind the mill's noise, lights and smell. This is false. Q.U.I.E.T. (Quell Unlawful Illegal Emissions Today) sent an anti-noise petition with 18 property owner's signatures to the mill in 2008. Prior to that, other property owners complained about the bright lights. Most of the sentiment is apathetic; you know, its worthless to fight it. What I hear, when I have conversations with most...
To The Eagle: I've attended a couple of town and county LNG-related meetings wherein the Sheriff's Office indicated it may double its force to provide security for LNG tankers in the Columbia River. Now that I found out a little bit about it, I don't get it. Why would we (the county) go into a new line of business even if it didn't cost us anything? The Coast Guard was on record in their water suitability study that they could accommodate LNG tanker traffic. Even though they might not want to, they are qualified to do all of the security work a...

NOT TOO BAD--We began this week with mostly sunshine and just a couple sprinkles on Valentine's Day and then on Monday, we had a mostly sunny day after some morning fog, before the clouds came in and got us pretty wet, but all in all, it wasn't too bad. I would say the Valentine/Presidents' weekend was pretty mild compared to other areas. I heard from my brother, Marshall Pedersen, in New Jersey and they have been doing a lot of that "shoveling routine." We better consider ourselves lucky as the East Coast is still getting battered by those...
NOT TOO BAD--Monday wasn't too bad; some fog in the morning and lots of sunshine, which was nice after several days of partially wet and cold. Looks like the dry streak won't last long as by the time you read this, we'll be ready for more raindrops and maybe even some wind. At least we aren't "shoveling" our weather, as those folks back East got hammered with a couple of feet of snow, so we're looking good. The only down side is that we might be singing the blues when our lack of snow pack brings us a drought this summer. Let's hope that...
