    The election for mayor of Cathlamet took a turn in the second round of tallying votes last Thursday. Incumbent Mayor Dale Jacobson claimed a narrow lead in the election, 69-65, over write-in candidate Laurel Waller. When votes were first counted Nov. 7, Waller led 58-53. Waller had filed as a candidate for Council Position 5, and she leads write-in candidate Jean Burnham, who was appointed to the council earlier this year, 96-42. Waller has said she would take the office of mayor and forfeit the council position if she were to defeat Jacobson....

  • Class 1B Football Playoffs--Comets reach quarterfinals

    The Naselle Comets advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 1B football playoffs with a 72-20 win over visiting Neah Bay last week. The Comets scored twice in the first quarter and three times in the second to lead 36-6 at halftime. They added 22 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth to complete the rout. The Portland native moved to Grays River with her husband, Charlie, in August, after finding a house and falling in love with it.     I hope everyone fared well with the wicked weather we were hit with last weekend. I came home from a wonderful weekend in Oregon with family to water over my driveway and ducks swimming in Lake Fred (normally pasture). And mud. My friend, PJ Katims and I left on Friday and drove through the Eagle Creek fire area to go to Redmond and Bend, Ore. The devastation along the highway is phenomenal. In places the metal guard rails beside the road were melted, with some of the burned trees still standing, but black and looking like skeletons. Thank God...

    The Naselle Comets improved their season record to 7-1, 5-0 in league play, with a 56-20 win over the Taholah Chitwins last weekend. The Comet ground game took control in the wet and windy conditions. Naselle scored twice in the first quarter for a 12-0 lead and three times in the second for a 40-0 halftime lead.     The Wahkiakum Mules cross country team competed in the Central 2B League Championships in Mossyrock last Thursday. Junior Leif Carroll was the sole Mule competitor in the 5,000 meter boy’s varsity race. He finished in 71st place with a time of 31:46.31. Freshman Ellie Hiatt led the Mule girls with a 25:10.1 time, taking 22nd place. Junior Chloe Wu finished with a time of 29:44.69, and took 41st place.     Virginia Wendelin, 93, a lifelong Grays River resident, died October 11, 2017 in Longview. She was born April 17, 1924 in Astoria, Ore., to John and Helen (Cook) King and grew up on a farm in Grays River. Virginia graduated from Naselle High School in 1942. In the mid 1940s Virginia married Ernest Wendelin and together they farmed in Grays River. For several years she was also the Post Master in Grays River. Virginia was an active member of the Naselle Assembly of God Church and a devout Christian. She loved the farm and her family, especially...
