To The Eagle: This letter is my plea for folks to support the Proposition 1 Public Safety Levy this November. I am voting yes for this levy. Why? There are several reasons. For 15 years our property taxes have been capped at 1 percent maximum increase per year. While property taxes remain at 1 percent increase per year, our public safety expenses increase anywhere from 3-4 percent, so the gap is widening each year between revenue to fund basic services and the cost to perform these services. We don’t have the retail tax revenue in our county t...

Do we live in the “wild and wilder” northwest or what? This past weekend was certainly an eye opener as to Mother Nature’s power and ferocity. I thought I was prepared for just about everything, but it seems that wasn’t the case as far as my beautiful old walnut tree was concerned. I have no idea how old it was, but as I stood in my living room watching the wind and rain, that monstrous tall tree just decided to lay over into the yard below our house. It was surreal, as if in slow motion. It is like losing an old friend. As I finish up this ar...

In the third quarter, fatigue set in on the short-handed Mules, and the Seagulls took control of the game. "We have so few players that everyone has to play both ways," Coach Eric Hansen commented. "It's hard to give people a rest. We have to get in better shape. "We held them to 99 yards in the first half. They had 83 yards in the third quarter, and 173 in the fourth." NICE START--After a bit of wetness to end last week, I was nicely surprised to see mostly sunny skies on Sunday to begin this week on a drier note. Some of the guys may not have been too happy about it, as it might have meant they had to give up some TV football time to go and mow that lawn one more time, but hopefully there was plenty of time left to watch their favorite teams or take in a little NASCAR! Of course, that was daytime hours, as Sunday evening wound up good and wet around West Valley, and depending on where you were, so was part...

It is so good to be home to my little piece of heaven, from the central valley of California’s 100 degree heat, traffic, people everywhere, police sirens and insane freeway driving to get anywhere. That said, it was probably the most wonderful and healing trip that I could have ever made. I spent 11 days with kids, grandkids and other family members that I hadn’t seen in years, as well as more of our “adopted kids” and their families. But going there will be only to visit. This is home. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle...
