The Wahkiakum Mules opened the 2016 season with a 48-6 win over the visiting Naselle Comets last Friday in the battle for the KM Trophy. The Mules stayed on the ground to control the game. Quarterback Lucas Brown opened the scoring with a three-yard run in the first quarter. The conversion kick failed, leaving the Mules up 6-0. Hank Ferguson punched in a one-yard plunge later in the quarter, and Zach Brown ran the conversion for a 14-0 Mule lead. In the second quarter L. Brown completed a...
SURPRISE--We started off last Saturday pretty wet here in West Valley, which was a bit of a surprise to me, as I had heard Astoria might get some drizzle but didn't think it would come inland quite so much, but hey, we'll take all the moisture we can get, and I didn't have to water the outside plants! For those not expecting any rain at all and who left windows down or other things outside, well, it was not a welcome sight. Considering we had some super hot days last week, this cooler batch of weather suits me just fine; might even be feeling...

It's all about the bling, people. On Saturday, the four young women vying for the honor of 2016 Wahkiakum County Fair Queen and some of their friends and family were on hand for a car wash and bake sale at the Bank of the Pacific in Cathlamet. The girls weren't wearing their tiaras that day, but they were laughing and having a good time after four hours of washing vehicles, with two more hours to go. Kyrah Scuito is the daughter of John and Wendy Scuito of Skamokawa. She's 17 and about to start...

Not that I dislike this cool drippy weather, but I think Mother Nature decided to cancel summer for this year. The Finnish American Folk Festival had an air of reunion about it. There were three class reunions and Naselle residents and relatives from near and far greeted each other and chatted in hallways, classrooms, at tables, at the market and in line for food. Even new visitors made connections. No one seemed to be a stranger. According to Anita Raistakka, 1,450 people signed the registration books, though not everyone who attended signed. There were visitors from 24 states and four foreign...

This has been a tough summer on the haymakers in our neck of the woods, never knowing when or if the rain is coming. As I work on this article, we have rain in the forecast, so the farmers are scurrying to get their baled hay under cover before it gets here. Wahkiakum County resident Dan Westlind has lived an interesting and varied life. He is well known for making beautiful knives and now he's getting a name for his work in steampunk and industrial age art. He was recently asked to show some of his pieces at the Antique Powerland Museum in Brooks, Ore. "Steampunk is the fastest growing art form in America," Westlind said. "Industrial recycled, machine age stuff. I do a combination of all of it." A former welder and machinist, he was hurt on the...
GETTING WARMER--We ended last week with a few showers and some cloudiness, but that was ok, as those extra high temperatures don't thrill me much anyway. However, for all those "want it hot" folks, Sunday began with clear blue skies and warm sunshine right off the bat, so I'm guessing they were mighty happy! If the forecast holds, it looks like Summer is returning this week, so keep lathered up with sun screen and enjoy! Sadly, another child was left in a car in the heat this past week and she is struggling to survive as temperatures rose to...
