To The Eagle: My heartfelt congratulations to Terry Howell at Health and Human Services for the splendid job she did in organizing the Fall Event,“Living Well in Wahkiakum County” that was held November 20 at Johnson Park in Grays River. Well attended by more than a hundred Wahkiakum residents (and some of our extended cousins in Naselle), this “maiden voyage” clearly indicated the beginning of an annual event of great benefit to all of us. The Emergency Backpacks that were given out to those who visited all of the forty-five (45) vendors...

Wintery temperatures are on the horizon and it looks like we need to make sure our vehicles are protected with antifreeze, our pet’s water bowls are in a place where they won’t freeze, and our hoses and water pipes are protected from the low freezing temperatures. It probably wouldn’t hurt to check on any of your neighbors who might need a hand with some of these tasks, before it’s too late. We all seem to have at least one neighbor/friend who could do with an extra hand but probably wouldn’t ask. Just sayin’ News from Naselle: The sports cale...
It didn't take long for the Wahkiakum Mules to take control of their first meeting with the Naselle Comets in several years. Two Comet fumbles, short fields for the Mules, and quick touchdowns and the Mules were on their way to a 60-14 win that gave them a post season playoff berth and possession of the KM Trophy, which since 1960, has gone to the winner of the football game between the neighboring teams. It may have been the last trophy game between the two teams, for the Comets are considering dropping to Class 1B because of declining enrollm...
COOLING OFF--The fireplaces are being stoked and the heaters are getting turned up, as we are definitely feeling some Fall temperatures in the air around here but then, I guess that's to be expected, as it is mid-November after all. While we may be back to some rain as this Tuesday morning arrives, at least we are not dealing with any serious weather conditions such as they've had in the Phillipines where thousands of lives are feared lost and towns were totally obliterated. We offer up our prayers on their behalf as they struggle with the...

It’s hard to believe that it is the middle of November already. The nice weather we have had so far makes you wonder what Mother Nature has in store for us for the rest of the winter. My rain gauge says that we have less than half of our normal average rainfall so far, so let’s hope we don’t get the rest of it in the next month and a half. News from Naselle: If you shop at Okie’s Market in Naselle, as most of us do, you probably know that a sweet, personable, hard working friend has left us. Julie Burns passed away this week and will certain...
On November 30, 1939, the Soviet Union launched an attack on Finland which brought this small independent country into World War II. To remember their struggles to remain independent and to honor the Finnish veterans and volunteers, two documentaries will be shown at the Appelo Archives Center on Saturday, November 16, beginning at 11 am. Fire and Ice - The Winter War of Finland and Russia was written, directed and produced by Ben Strout. He used photographs, interviews with participants, and reenactments to recount this complicated history....

Fifty years ago, the 1963 Wahkiakum Mule football team earned a record of 8-0 and were voted second in the state in the football writers’ poll. The team edged the Knappa Loggers 12-7 in their first game and held opponents scoreless in their next seven games. They were Pacific League champions. There were no statewide football playoffs, so they didn’t have an opportunity to claim a legitimate state title. They were good athletes: There was (and is) a state basketball tournament, and the Mules, with that group of athletes, won the state cha...

The Wahkiakum Mules overcame a slow start to beat the Toutle Lake Ducks 38-7 in their final game of the regular season last Friday night. The Mules finish the regular season with a 6-2 record, good for third place in the Central League. On Friday, the visiting Ducks gave the Mules field position in the first quarter but played good enough defense to keep the Mules out of the endzone. That lasted till the first play of the second quarter when quarterback Gunnar Blix followed a wall of blockers...
NOT BAD--If it weren't for the heavy fog in the early morning hours and some of the evening hours, the days have been pretty decent lately. We had a dash of rain in the night on Saturday, so things were pretty damp Sunday morning, but with the sun coming out and brightening up the orange and yellow foilage, it looked like a pretty nice fall day. More scattered showers are expected this week after a freezing Monday evening and Tuesday morning, but hopefully they won't turn into downpours and things will be fairly dry this evening, as this is...
Retired Naselle teacher, principal and coach Lyle R. Patterson passed away Oct. 19, 2013, after a long illness. He was the son of Joseph and Florence Patterson, born Jan. 11, 1929, in a log cabin north of Spokane. Both of his parents died while he was young, and Lyle was raised by an aunt and an older brother. He graduated from South Haven High School in South Haven, Mich., in 1947. Lyle joined the military in 1947 and served in the occupation of Japan. During the Korean War he flew 31 combat missions and received the Air Medal and the...
The Morton/White Pass Timberwolves showed the Wahkiakum Mules why they're the state's top ranked Class 2B football team last Friday by handing the visiting Mules a 51-0 Central League loss. "They're solid," commented Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "They have a good line and two good running backs. Their quarterback is accurate in his passes and he can run the ball. Their defense swarms to the ball. They played the game the way it's supposed to be played. "I thought Shane Souvenir, Mason Mackey and...
Most fans expected a shoot out when the Wahkiakum Mules entertained the Napavine Tigers last Friday, and it was just that in the first half which ended in a 20-20 tie. However, the visitors took control of the game in the second half, blanked the Mules, and claimed a 34-20 Central League victory. The two teams are tied for second place in league standings with 5-1 records; the Morton/White Pass Timberwolves, topped ranked team in the Associated Press Class 2B poll, lead the league with a 6-0...
NICE--As this week began, we've had some really sunny days, which were very enjoyable. However, we started Monday morning off with temperatures below freezing and the heavy fog has made a nice layer of frost on the outside vehicles, so while the days are nice, the evenings are pretty nippy. The thick fog has hung around for several mornings and with very limited visibility, it's really essential to turn on ones' headlights so your vehicle can be more visible. CORRECTION--Unfortunately I put out some incorrect information last week regarding...
