CHANGING--As Labor Day week began, we had a super nice day on Sunday, if you like it hot and sticky. There was a lot of sunshine, which made it a bit warm for me, but it was great for all those who had gone camping and enjoying the outdoors and of course, the BBQ folks were not threatened by any rain. Our trip to California was wonderful, lots of visiting with old friends, a soccer tournament for our grandson (the team took 3rd place), and lots of hugs and fun time with family. Lifetime Deep River, Washington resident, Mildred Laine, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18th, 11 years to the day that she lost her husband of 55 years, Waino Laine. Mildred was born in Deep River on September 4, 1922, along with twin brother Robert, to August and Mary Haataja. Mildred was the proud Finnish descendant of grandparents Ephraim and Anna Haataja of Seal River and Carl and Amanda Hanson of Frankfort. News from Naselle: Little 4-year-old Jessi Harman survived a near death accident on Mother’s Day. While her mother was in the barn having the family horse shod, Jessi became entangled in some horse gear and was left lifeless. Due to quick mouth to mouth resuscitation, they were able to get a heartbeat and she was transported via Life Flight to Portland. There is good hope that with therapy Jessi will be able to run, play and return to her old spirited self again. This will require months of therapy which is not covered by insurance. There will...

When Becky Ledtke’s tenure as Fair Manager ended this year, Patty Dursteler was hired to step in. The late start has not deterred Dursteler or her volunteers, to whom she is grateful. In April 2013, the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District received the news that they had been selected out of many schools competing nationwide to receive two grants for two guest teachers from China. As a result, they are the fifth school district in Washington to implement an Elementary Dual Immersion Program in Mandarin. Dual immersion goes beyond simply learning words in another language.
