News from Naselle: Little 4-year-old Jessi Harman survived a near death accident on Mother’s Day. While her mother was in the barn having the family horse shod, Jessi became entangled in some horse gear and was left lifeless. Due to quick mouth to mouth resuscitation, they were able to get a heartbeat and she was transported via Life Flight to Portland. There is good hope that with therapy Jessi will be able to run, play and return to her old spirited self again. This will require months of therapy which is not covered by insurance. There will...
I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed the little bit of rain we got last week. Our nephew from California thought it was great, as they don’t see much down in the desert. He actually turned on the windshield wipers of his new jeep for the first time since he bought it. News from Naselle: Only another month until the kids are back in school for the new year, but there are activities beginning to take place in preparation for getting back in the groove. There will be a special Naselle-Grays River Valley School board meeting on Tue...

Here it is, August already. Where has this year gone? It seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to get done, but I guess time flies when you’re having fun, right? I can say that when I see progress being made on the home front. It looks like we may see a sprinkle of two later this week. I’m looking forward to it. News from Naselle: Kindergarten screening will take place for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School on August 15. The Play and Learn Group meets at the Valley Bible Church each Thursday morni...
In April 2013, the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District received the news that they had been selected out of many schools competing nationwide to receive two grants for two guest teachers from China. As a result, they are the fifth school district in Washington to implement an Elementary Dual Immersion Program in Mandarin. Dual immersion goes beyond simply learning words in another language. The goal is for elementary students to attain true bi-literacy. This means they will learn to listen, read, write, speak and think in two languages....
It’s still summer, and most folks can’t believe it. This is the longest dry spell that I can remember since we came here 13 years ago. I hear some farmers may even get a third cutting of hay on some of their fields. Does anyone else enjoy the sounds and smells of this country life, with the scent of warm cut grass and the machinery working late into the evenings? It sure beats the sounds of traffic and the smells of city life. News from Naselle: If anyone has a child that they would like to enroll in the Naselle ECEAP program, please con...

Most of us could really get used to this beautiful weather, but I for one, miss the rain. I’m sure the farmers making hay don’t though. A few clouds seem to be rolling in this Tuesday morning, but the weather says it will stay dry and muggy. News from Naselle: There will be a special budget hearing held by the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board on Tuesday, July 23 at 5:30 p.m. The community is invited to attend. I had a note from Becky Erickson, who has been teaching preschool at the Naselle ECEAP Preschool now for five years and she is...

Visit the Appelo Archives Center in Naselle to view Hope in Hard Times: Washington during the Great Depression, opening July 14 and running through October 5. Hope in Hard Times was developed in partnership with Humanities Washington and the Washington State Historical Society, and will travel to eight communities around the state over the next two years. "The exhibit looks at real people dealing with tough times....
I hope everyone’s Fourth of July was as wonderful as ours was. We had about 36 people here (even though we were missing half of our kids and grandkids this year) and 13 dogs, and would you believe it, no dog fights. The little ones fell asleep early so the fireworks were postponed until Saturday night, which was just as well as I had to rescue my daughter and son-in-law after they suffered a breakdown in Ridgefield. We didn’t get back until about 10 p.m. that night. There was lots of food (which I didn’t have to prepare), a little rally racin...

I just visited with Bob and Bev Paul at the Rosburg Store and they asked me to let everyone know how much their experience at the Grays River Café has meant to them. They said that the past 10 years here has been the best, they have made so many dear friends, enjoyed the ups and downs of our area (flooding, etc.), and the willingness of everyone to help out when it was needed and appreciate the opportunity they have had to be here in our beautiful, loving community. The people here are very special to them, and they wanted to say a big t...

In an effort to reduce underage drinking and build awareness of the penalties of supplying alcohol to minors, Wahkiakum Community Network volunteers partnered two weeks ago with Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office, Health and Human Services, local students from Wahkiakum and Naselle high schools and local retailers to distribute bottle tags throughout Wahkiakum County. Local surveys in Wahkiakum County report that three out of every four high school students surveyed report that alcohol is easy or very easy to get. When students drink, they a...
Willapa National Wildlife Refuge staff invite people to rally for the Refuge. The year 2013 has brought increased federal budget constraints and a cut of the refuges’ summer Youth Conservation Corps programs. These youth crews conduct much needed work to keep facilities looking good, invasive species at bay, and accomplish other light conservation efforts. This summer and fall, refuge staff, friends and other volunteers will put on events for the public. Participants may learn about neighborhood refuges, explore unique places, meet new people,...
It looks like we will get a few raindrops in the next couple of days, but it certainly has been nice weather for the past week. After breaking a belt on my lawnmower a couple of weeks ago, and only completing half of the yard at that time, it looked like I would need to bring in the hay equipment to cut the rest of it. Finally the new belt arrived (I bought an extra to have on hand) and thanks to neighbor, Dirk Heitsch it was replaced in a matter of minutes. Several hours later, I had a mowed yard again and a cold brew to celebrate. Now if the...

It is looking a lot more like summer, with the warmer days and more sunshine. I see more lawns being mowed and many farmers cutting the hay fields. Dirk Heitsch has brought his herd of cows back to our pasture and it is a joy to watch the babies romp and play in the tall grass. Dirk spoils “his girls” every day when he comes by. Each one needs to have some individual attention from him and they follow him around like puppy dogs. Maybe that’s why his beef tastes so good. News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle-Grays River Valley Class...
