To The Eagle: Looks like we might get a second chance! After the huge disappointment that the Naselle-Grays River Valley school bond didn't pass, I wanted to take this opportunity to plea for the no voters to give it more thought and perhaps choose to be supportive. I'm not sure of the demographics (other than west end Wahkiakum county soundly voting no), but I would imagine locals with kids and grandkids in our schools would generally be positive. They see first hand how an area that gets over 100 inches of rain a year might need more room...
To The Eagle: I’m engaged in an effort to convince our state Legislature to exempt rural school districts from high-cost state prevailing wage requirements. Such an exemption would save our school district $2 million (or more) on an $8 million construction program. On February 13 I testified in Olympia before a Senate committee hearing in favor of proposed bill SB 5508 for that purpose. FYI: Ohio exempts all school construction. First, I’d like to publicly thank Sen. Hatfield for agreeing to sponsor this bill as a result of a cam...

Happy Valentine’s Day to all the Eagle readers and staff. I feel very blessed this day for the love of family and friends. Today, I wish everyone much love and happiness in return for all that you have given us. News from Naselle: There will be no sch...

To The Eagle: In a 1942 Grays River Builder newspaper, a short article focused on the latest school district election. It read, "The voters tried out the new method of elections on Saturday when the elections were held in each of the component parts of the consolidated district." "Locally our issues were the election of one director and a 5-mill tax levy. The director elected was William Whitten of Altoona, succeeding Mayme Johnson. The tax levy, however, failed to carry as there was an insufficient number of votes cast to legalize a tax levy....

BITTER COLD--This past week has been an extremely cold one around our area with temperatures in the low 20's and slick roads and icy ponds everywhere. We had folks in the ditch or doing a dance on the highways, so it was definitely a challenging week to stay on the road and to stay warm. Depending on what weather report you listen to, we could be in for some more freezing rain or snow, so be careful out there. For your own safety, please turn on those headlights as foggy conditions make the visibility of your car extremely difficult. SPECIAL...
Howies' Corner Coffeehouse now the Tall Tree Cafe This week marks the closure of Howies Corner Shop. After three years on Main Street, Mark and Deb Howie have sold their business. Mr. McBride plans to add regular lunch specials aimed at teens and those working with a tight budget. Alex Arness, the current manager, will stay on and has big plans to add more menu items. The changeover started this week with a grand...
William V. Wuorinen, a life-long resident of Naselle, will be awarded the Silver Star by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera-Beutler on January 30, 1:30 p.m., in the Naselle school gymnasium. The award is being presented to Mr. Wuorinen for his action on March 16, 1953 in Korea, said Nick Nikkila, of the Deep River American Legion. During the battle for Little Gibraltar Hill, Wuorinen and another private dragged a severely wounded colonel into a trench and, working as a team, stood off an advancing force of Chinese soldiers while giving life-saving fir...
Wahkiakum fans were left utterly stunned this week after the Mules were upset in back-to-back home games by Winlock and Naselle, falling 54-41 to the Cardinals on Friday and 51-47 to the Comets on Monday. The losses dropped the Mules to 6-3 in league play and 9-4 overall for the season. The Mules trailed 10-8 after one quarter of play against Winlock, but fought back to take a 26-18 lead into the break. After sinking a couple baskets to extend their lead early in the third quarter, things came apart for the Mules. They were outscored by the...
WINTER IS HERE-- When the temperatures start dipping into the 20s around here and the highs are in the 30s, you know that winter has arrived in earnest. Those of us on private water systems wind up being obsessed by the temperatures of the days and evenings. The sunshine can lure you into thinking all is well with your water lines, when in fact, it's just a tease and you can still freeze up if your source is located in a shady, still-frozen parts of the woods. One must take extra care to keep those lines flowing. If you're out of power, a...

The color of...
WET SNOW?--The big question on everyone's mind is whether or not it is going to snow today (Thursday) as forecasters were saying earlier in the week that we could see more white conditions around the area. I know skiers and folks who love to play in the snow with their 4-wheelers are all excited about it, but as for me, I'll pass! If it does happen to show up, please take extra care and caution when driving around in it, as you may know what you're doing, but that other guy might not! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...
