    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 20, 2012

The highlights came early and often last Friday as the Wahkiakum Mules beat the visiting Adna Pirates 54-20 in Central League football. The win boosted the Mules' record to 3-0; Adna fell to 0-3 for the first time in years and years. Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 20, 2012

TIME'S FLYING--Well, as you can see by the date, time is flying by super fast and we're already heading into our fourth week of the month. Where has the time gone and won't it please slow down? I think that ever since I was sick, I've been behind and cannot seem to get caught up on all the things I know that need doing before our rains come and don't leave. To top it all off, Autumn officially starts this Saturday, so say farewell to Summer. Let's hope for an Indian Summer and I'd say from the little heat wave of last weekend, we're headed in...

  • Grange News

    Darlene Ammer|Sep 20, 2012

As we wrap up summer, I will review some of the events our Grange was part of. In addition, I will recognize key people who made these events a success. Grays River Grange hosted this year’s salmon dinner at the Finnish American Folk Festival in Naselle. Nearly 200 dinners were purchased. Thanks to all who participated in this fund raiser for the Grange. We have been invited back to prepare the dinner for the 2014 Finn Festival. There were many comments on what an excellent dinner the Grange prepared. The salmon was superb, Scandinavian p...

On Tuesday, the Mules traveled to Onalaska and lost 12-25, 21-25, 15-25. "We started slowly, and things didn't pick up enough for us to come up with a win," Anderson said. Our first outing of the season came last Tuesday at the Naselle Jamboree. Unfortunately only two teams were able to make it, Naselle and Wahkiakum. In that regard, it was a very quick meet. Trynity Mendez 8:21.25, 4. Aly Kirzy 8:32.22, 5. Katy Stacey 9:56.72, and 6. Kyra Scuito 12.17. Shona and Mya are the only returning athletes for middle school, and they will...

  • Youth camp residents head east to fight fires

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 13, 2012

When the fate of the Naselle Youth Camp seemed questionable in recent months, local residents feared a loss of jobs, a hit to the local economy and a decreased enrollment in schools. Residents and local government officials were adamant in the belief that the youth camp was essential to our community. Most recently, the young men living in the medium security facility are proving to be essential on the state level as well. Naselle Youth Camp residents, male offenders receiving educational and treatment services, have been on the front lines,...

  • Farmstock: All the good things

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 6, 2012

Tucked just out of view from coast-bound traffic, people from all over the area filled the fields of Fred’s Homegrown Farm – a mock parking lot – and happily progressed from workshops, to cooking, exhibits, and through the farmers market. This, in addition to camping, music and late-night dancing, were all part of the weekend festivities called Farmstock, a regional, homegrown festival. Hosted by Fred Johnson who owns a 70-acre farm on South Valley Road in Naselle, locals were invited to bring farm goods, expertise, wares and t...

  • Change occurs for Eagle reporting staff

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 6, 2012

This week, I announce some changes in staff. Reporter Melissa Linquist is leaving us, more or less. When we hired her last spring, she was completing her student teaching. It looked like none of the local school districts would be hiring a full-time elementary school teacher, and she would be a substitute teacher. That would have allowed her to continue as our part-time reporter. Alas, the Ocean Beach School District experienced some staff changes in August, and when an elementary position came open, they snapped up our enterprising reporter....

  • Haymakers taking advantage of weather

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 6, 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and enjoyed the nice weather we had as well. There were lots of things going on all over the area with yard sales, bake sales, Farmstock in Naselle, and barbecues with friends and family. Haymakers are still working on getting the bales made and stored away for the winter feedings. Derek Heitsch is making hay on one of our fields, and it seems to be taking forever with the moisture in the air during the nights. His cows will enjoy it later with all the nice clover from that field. News from Naselle:...

  • Are you prepared for any emergency?

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 30, 2012

DAMP--As this week begins and the weekend ends, we're seeing some dampness out here in West Valley, which was definitely not in the forecast at least not for a couple more days. However, I'm sure all my plants and my poor dry lawn were happy to see the light misty stuff come down and give it a little drink. All of us on springs and wells were happy too, as every little bit helps after a long dry spell. On Monday morning the fog made for some heavy dew, but parts of my driveway were already dry by noon. This little spattering of rain isn't...

After nearly a month without rain, we drove in from Oregon on Sunday evening and looking to the west, sure enough, the rain was back. Not much though, just enough to irritate the farmers who are still making hay. News from Naselle: Before school begins for the 2012/13 year, many will be enjoying a last long weekend and finishing up their school shopping. Then back to the books. Here’s to a fantastic new school year. The first day of school will be on Tuesday. Check with the school office if you have questions about classes or bus schedules. S...

Thank you Mother Nature, we really are getting a summer. This weather is great, not too hot for too long and it even cools down at night. We had the pleasure of Steve and Linda Ramsay’s grandchildren coming over for a hot dog roast with s’mores and ice cream the other night after they went swimming in the Grays River near our house. Kids sure have a way of brightening the day. Thank you for the kid fix, Sarah, Skyler, Logan, Brandon and Brenton. Come back any time. Oh yes, glad to have Steve, Linda, Brandon and Amanda as well. Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 9, 2012

Home Depot employees showed local residents that they understand the impact of hard work and sweat equity. With the belief in the power of hands-on service, “Team Depot” volunteers joined community members at Lion’s Club Park in Naselle on Thursday to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. To the passersby, the park was spotted with bright orange t-shirts with the word “Team Depot” boldly printed across the chest. Inside, neighbors shoveled loose gravel into wheelbarrows, applied fresh coats of paint to existing structures, and planted new trees...
