The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team beat the Comets in Naselle on Monday in five innings with a score of 12-1. Starting pitcher Zach Brown struck out five, allowed one hit and one run and was given the win. Joanne Marie Chapman, who loved to be called Jo, was born in Longview on October 2, 1970 to parents Ken Chapman and Sonja Kruse of Rosburg. Joanne passed away peacefully March 18, 2014 at the Hospice Care Center with her family by her side. Joanne was a very unique individual who began participating in Special Olympics when only eight, acquiring numerous medals over the years in swimming, track, baseball, soccer and bowling. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had found my first trillium. Well, on my walk with the dogs yesterday, I hit the jackpot. There must have been 300 trilliums in one little area of our woods. They were just beautiful, and I had never seen so many, so I picked my first bouquet to enjoy in the house. The hummingbirds are back in full force and they sure are hungry little devils. Written by Merle Reinikka, the book was published by the Finnish American Historical Society of the West in Portland. Gean E. Deege, 71, passed away, February 9, 2014, peacefully surrounded by family at home. Gean was born in McCoole, Maryland, August 10, 1942. In her teens she moved to California where she met her husband, of 49 years, Walter Deege. They lived in Thousand Oaks, California before moving to Rosburg, Washington where they settled in for the last 28 years. The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) was awarded $2.2 million in grant funding by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to support three critical coastal wetland projects in Washington state, including Ellsworth Creek and the Naselle River.
