  • Election ballots are coming soon

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 20, 2011

Vote-by-mail ballots will soon arrive in the mailboxes of Washington's registered voters. With the presidential election out of the way two years ago, there's not much on the ballot. Voters living in the confines of Port District 2 have the only contested race on the ballot. Lori Scott is challenging incumbent Carlton Appelo for the position that represents western Wahkiakum County. Appelo is over 90 years old but his mind is still sharp. He was one of the founding commissioners of the district back in 1966 and feels he brings a wealth of...

  • Lots of family friendly events coming up

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 20, 2011

It sure is nice to have so much sunshine lately. I might even get the lawn mowed one more time before the rains make it impossible. The chill in the morning and evening air are sure signs of fall making an appearance, but the leaves haven’t really had much of a change in their colors yet. Derek Heitsch has brought some of his cows in to graze on one of our fields for a few days. It’s fun to watch them and not have the responsibility of taking care of them. Does that make me lazy? News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle Comets on the...

  • Harvest and Halloween events scheduled

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen. They actually had the typed page turned sideways on the screen. Thank goodness our son Carl was here, as I had no idea how to fix that problem. But on the other hand, they sure are cute and they love all the dogs. I guess we’ll keep them. Our hot tub h...

  • Country Days was a successful event

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 6, 2011

I am now the proud owner of (or maybe owned by) two new kittens. They both come from feral heritage, and were raised and nurtured by a dear friend. Alwen and Isabel are gray and white, long haired with stubby tails and are the most loving kittens I’ve ever seen. As I sit here typing, Alwen is asleep on my right shoulder and Isabel is in my lap curled in a ball. They have only been here in their new home for about two hours, and already have settled in. News from Naselle: Keep up the good work, Naselle Comets. Congratulations on the win last F...

  • Buy local for holiday gifts

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 22, 2011

WARM WEEKEND--After some rain last weekend, it looks like things are heating up this week and it will feel more like Summer than most of Summer felt. So, when Fall officially starts this Friday, we'll be basking in temperatures in the 80s they say, so it's not time to put away the sun screen quite yet. The rain last weekend didn't make those with outdoor plans too happy, but I'm sure all the plants enjoyed the drink and it helped lower our fire danger in the woods, so it was really a good thing. With time ticking away, that batch of rain we...

  • Writer has the answer

    Sep 21, 2011

To The Eagle: I love reading The Wahkiakum County Eagle. However, I dislike reading about the Mayor's personal attack on an upstanding citizen like Jerry DeBriae. Jerry has spent his adult life devoted to the Fire Dept. and the town of Cathlamet. I think the answer is for the Mayor to resign. Paul Bjornsgard Naselle...

HOT ONE--Several days last week were quite toasty, as was half the weekend, so while school started, hunting season began and we are thinking Fall, it felt like Summer had finally shown up and about cooked us all! I'm glad it was cooling off as it was a bit much for some of us, and the poor kids who had to practice and play football in this heat, were certainly not enjoying it. Of course, when it starts raining and blowing, it won't be much fun either. As this work week begins the clouds have moved in and it's about 25 degrees cooler. We may...

Tim was born January 1, 1957, in Longview, to Bob and Joanne McNally. He attended elementary school in Cathlamet, and graduated from Naselle High School in 1975 where he played sports, and was a member of the basketball team that played in the state tournament. • Farmstock celebrates farm and food

    Ruby Murray|Sep 8, 2011

On the warm Labor Day weekend, Fred Johnson opened his Naselle farm for a celebration of farming, good food and music called Farmstock, as a fundraiser for KMUN Coast Radio. Farmstock brought together regional farmers, musicians and those seeking to learn about farming. Experts offered talks on poultry farming, seed saving and living an off-the-grid lifestyle. When Teed Prestegard of Cathlamet heard about Farmstock, he said, “I thought it was going to be like Woodstock. I know I wasn’t the only one who thought that.” JoAnn Prestegard said,...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 8, 2011

I’m not complaining but don’t you find it unusual that it is raining in Yucca Valley, California, and not in Grays River? With all this warm dry weather, we have been able to finally put down our hardwood flooring and are in process of putting the final coats of finish on. What a job, but certainly worth it. News from Naselle: Good job, Comets on last Friday’s football game. Keep up the good work. Sports on the schedule for Naselle include: Thursday-volleyball at home with Ilwaco at 5:45 p.m.; Friday-football at home with Knappa at 7 p.m.;...

  • Are you ready for some football?

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 1, 2011

COOLER/STILL NICE--As this work week began, a few clouds rolled in and we had a couple of spritzes of rain, but after a little of the same on Monday, we saw sunshine and it was a pretty decent day. It looks like we'll continue to have some decent weather this week. As a matter of fact, last weekend was perfect. I heard from Kelly Hammond in Virginia and she and other family members had gone inland and were just fine, and even upon returning home, only found minor damages to the house. Jamie Kincaid was fine in North Carolina and didn't even...

  • Johnson Park belongs to all

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 1, 2011

News from Naselle: September already, and school begins again. It seems like summer just started, and now it’s time for new classes, fall sports and cooler weather once again. At least the nice daytime temperatures seem to be hanging around. Today (Thursday) is the first day of school for the 2011/12 class year at the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District, and the sports teams have already had a few weeks of practice. Sports schedules for this week include: Friday, football at home with Ilwaco at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, volleyball at Knappa a...

  • Youth leaders say teachers need to confront students who use

    Ruby Murray|Aug 31, 2011

The Wahkiakum School District Board met August 24 and approved contracts for district staff and heard from youth leadership about additional efforts needed to reduce marijuana use. Districts across the state have handled the state legislature’s 1.9 percent cut to teacher wages reductions differently, Superintendent Bob Garrett said. Some have no funds to offset losses and others have large enough cash reserves to make up all of the teachers’ loss. The Wahkiakum board agreed to offset the loss to teacher’s salaries by reducing the hours they...

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

DRIPPY BEGINNING--This work week is beginning a little damp, not making any hay-makers happy, but my lawn is probably thrilled as it was looking a little parched. The full week of dry weather that some forecasted fell apart as a weak system came in and gave us some heavy cloud cover Sunday evening and this light rain Monday morning. By Monday evening the drizzle turned into down right rain, and the clearing that I thought we'd have by Tuesday, certainly didn't show up here Tuesday morning either. It's another wet one I'm afraid. FAIR TIME--It...

  • Biochar workshop added to Farmstock

    Aug 25, 2011

A workshop on producing biochar has been added to Farmstock, KMUN's regional homegrown festival Labor Day Weekend, September 3-4, at Fred's Farm in Naselle. Jim Karnofski, retired registered nurse and microbiologist, will demonstrate his kit for producing biochar in the home and explain how biochar has been used by indigenous cultures for millennia to turn marginal soil into long-lasting nirvana for vegetables. Karnofski joins the roster of workshops to be presented all day Saturday at Farmstock. Scheduled for three sessions, visitors to the...

  • DNR crew's hard work benefits Johnson Park

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

I don’t know about you but the warm rain was quite refreshing at the beginning of this week. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sunshine, but when it gets above 80, it’s too hot. That was one of the many reasons to leave California. The farmers making hay probably didn’t appreciate the rain much as many of them are still trying to get the bales into the barns, and there are still quite a few bales in the fields. It looks like more good weather on the way though, at least through the weekend. News from Naselle: One more week until school begins...
