Early Saturday morning a group of seven volunteers arrived at the Fairgrounds to complete a painting project. They spent the day painting the inside of the horse barn stalls red and leveling the ground inside of the stalls. At noon the volunteers took a break and were served a gourmet lunch by Lois Wakefield. Lois brought enough food to feed all the volunteers working on the horse barn and everyone else volunteering on the various projects on the Fairgrounds that day. The barn is looking great thanks to Horse Barn Superintendent Valerie Antijun...
News from Naselle: Though I wasn’t able to see a “Beauty and the Beast” performance this past week, I have heard nothing but rave revues. Some folks liked it so much that they actually went to see it twice. It’s comments like those that should make this community very proud of our wonderful Barb Swanson and her expertise in putting together these productions every year, while giving our kids the opportunity to gain self confidence and perform in front of appreciative audiences. This community is so fortunate to have good teachers and a wonderfu...

I have heard that rainy weather doesn’t stop people from traveling to rummage sales; I know that this is a true fact now. Even though it was raining so hard it was knocking blossoms off flowers, at 10 a.m. cars started pulling up! They came to shop, visit and look over the projects going on at the Fairgrounds. We had neighbors, friends and travelers stop by and everyone left with sacks of treasures. Many were amazed at the variety of items that have been donated to support our Fair. Special thanks to Jerry Ledtke and Ursula Petralia for v...

Parents, please talk to your students and know their plans, time frames, who they are with, where they are going, and speak openly and candidly about drinking. Young people need to hea...
Following Veteran’s Day last year, I proposed a joint project between the Naselle-Grays River High School (NHS), The Appelo Archive Center in Naselle and the American Legion Post 111 in Deep River. The project was to have NHS juniors in my US History class interview veterans living in the school district and video tape those interviews so their experiences could be preserved for future generations. As a part of that project, Tavish Hammonds and Rachel Underwood interviewed William (Billy) Wuorinen, a resident of Naselle. As the interview u...

The Mules took advantage of smart base running and numerous Comet errors as they sent the Comets packing with a 15-1 defeat last Friday in Cathlamet. Defense was a chore for the Comets as they committed eight errors that led to many of the Mules’ runs. However, the Mules did their part at the plate as well, tallying 12 hits and swiping a ridiculous 17 bases. The Mules also took advantage of five walks and three hit batters. Brandon Fudge led the charge offensively, going three for four with a double, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and...

It’s definitely spring. The birds singing and chirping in the morning is enough to wake anyone up. I don’t remember them starting out so early in the morning though. Daffodils are blooming everywhere even where there haven’t been any before. Must be from flood waters. I’ve even seen quite a few eagles sitting in the trees along the Grays. Looking for an easy fish meal, maybe? News from Naselle: Remember when all the rhodies in front of the school were just huge and beginning to look kind of ratty? Then they were all cut back due to their h...
