The Naselle Youth Camp, targeted for closure in Governor Christine Gregoire’s budget for 2009-2011, will remain open. The final budget was passed late Saturday by the Legislature. The camp is still subject to the same cost-trimming directives as other state agencies and institutions across the state, however, it is still considered a victory for Senators Brian Hatfield (D-Raymond), and Democratic Reps Dean Takko and Brian Blake of Longview. All three made the camp his number one priority this session. “It wasn’t easy, but we knew the camp...
The Naselle School Board met April 21 to discuss a variety of topics. Naselle-Grays River Valley High School Assistant Principal Jon Tienhaara told the board he would be taking a group of sophomores to the Seattle/Bellingham area May 1, 2 and 3 to tour colleges, including the Art Institute of Seattle and Western Washington University. Thanks to the GEAR-UP grant, Tienhaara and three parents will take around 20 students to look at the schools. The program is successful because of the staff, “we couldn’t do any of this without them,” he said....

The department has planned the improvements to reduce the severity of collisions where motorists have driven off the roadway. Improvements will include installing guardrail, removing fixed objects, widening shoulders, flattening slopes, traffic control and other work. The SR 401 improvements will begin...
More than a year ago, with about 50 boxes of library books, donated by the Friends of the Bend Library in Bend, Oregon, a huge project began to unfold in Rosburg. A public and free library for the west end of Wahkiakum County was envisioned by a few interested volunteers, as well as many residents. With a room available in the old Rosburg School, the blessing of the Johnson Park Advisory Board, and lots of work, it looks like this dream will become a reality in 2009. The community of Seaside, Ore. donated their old shelving units to the...
A Long Beach man died April 16 when the recyling truck he was driving ran off SR 101. The driver was Brian Keith Shaffer, 36, of Long Beach. He was driving a 1995 recycling truck. He was wearing a seatbelt. The accident occurred at 1:59 p.m. 12 miles northwest of Naselle. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, the truck was southbound and ran off the road when the front right tire blew out. The truck went off the right hand shoulder, struck several trees, which pinned the driver in the cab, and came to rest on a...

The uncertainty of the Naselle Youth Camp continues to be the main issue of discussion at the Naselle Grays River Valley School Board meetings. On March 17, the Department of Natural Resources announced they would be pulling forest work crews at the camp at the end of May. Aaron Toso, communications director for DNR, said it has nothing to do with potential camp closure. He said DNR is unique because they are forced to make the difficult decisions before the Legislature announces their budget. “It is definitely bad times,” he said, adding if th...

Pe Ell held a 37-31 scoring advantage for the next two quarters. Chase...
A bill has been introduced to legislature that could save the Naselle Youth Camp from closure. The Sentence for Treatment bill would be an alternative for juvenile courts. While NYC is not named in the bill, it is the intended location for the direct to treatment option. Bill supporters say this would make fiscal sense for the state which is facing supreme cuts due to a budget shortfall. This option would save money for the state in youth detention costs and create a larger mission for the camp with more stable funding. Senate Bill 6039,...

Now a chiropractor, former Naselle Youth Camp resident Adam Lopez was one of many to urge state officials to maintain funding for the camp at a community meeting last Wednesday in Naselle. Photo by Sunny Manary. Forty some years ago, the citizens of Naselle and surrounding areas gathered to protest the possible opening of a youth detention center in the area. “Not in my back yard!” was the consensus. Many of those same NIMBY’s and more assembled at a town meeting February 4 with a much different tone. “This is our backyard!” was the attitude...
On Sunday, the Appelo Archive Center opened the C.A and Agnes Appelo Memorial Library in Naselle. The center, owned by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation, rents the space for the library. Foundation President Linda Elliott said the room used to be used for storage. “Look at it now!” she said with a big smile. “I’m so excited this has happened. To put together something like this on the Westend!” Elliott believes this is the first time anything like this has opened in that area. Don Chandler traveled from Cross Plains, Wisconsin, to attend th...
The possible Naselle Youth Camp closure was the main issue at the Naselle-Grays River School Board meeting January 20. Superintendent Alan Bennett said if the camp were to close, there would be a major change in staff in the district. At a recent superintendents' meeting, Bennett reported all districts are facing cuts, “but I can tell you, no one is going to have to deal with the level of cuts we will have to deal with if the youth camp closes.” The closure would be a huge change in staffing, with 1/3 of the teachers gone; there would be iss...
What a wild winter this has been! From the snow storms, to rain showers and flooding, this is the craziest weather Wahkiakum has seen for a long time! Despite the weather, you can never put a damper on the hustle and bustle at WA-KI-HI! We have been busier than ever, between basketball games, wrestling meets, drama productions and school work, there isn’t much time to waste! The Lady Mul...
