The Onalaska Loggers proved to be too much for the Wahkiakum Mule football team to handle, and the visitors went home with a 59-0 win on the Mules' homecoming last Friday. For the second week in a row, the Wahkiakum Mule football team fell hard to a top-ranked Class 2B football team. Last Friday, the Adna Pirates beat the Mules 39-0. The young Mules, with a majority of the starters being underclassmen, struggled against the upperclassmen of the Pirates, and injuries took a toll. In other words, the Napavine Tigers rolled over the Wahkiaum Mules 49-7 in a Central League football game last Friday. With a small squad this year, the Mules suited up only 15 players, a majority of them freshmen and sophomores. The Skyline Golf Clinic started the week after school ended and lasted until August 4th, running Mondays through Thursdays from 9-12. The clinic had eight participants this year and culminated with four players competing at the Mint Valley Jr. Golf Championship. Three of the four boys placed by winning on the last day. The nearshore recreational halibut fishery in Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco) is extended from three days per week to seven days per week effective June 15 until further notice. There is sufficient quota set aside for the nearshore recreational Pacific halibut fishery in Marine Area 1 to extend the days per week that the fishery is open. The Skyline Men's Golf Club played a Shamble Event on Wednesday June 3. A Shamble means each man plays his own ball from the group's best tee shot. This particular event counted the two best scores per hole. First place at 64 and eight under par was the team of Steve McNally, Dave McNally, Randy Coleman and Nick Vavoudis. Wahkiakum Mule golfer Elliot Haney struck the ball very well on the second day at the WIAA State Golf Championship in Richland at Columbia Pointe Golf Course. Just like most of the eight kids from the southwest district, he never could capitalize on the greens. With the exception of the state champion Kenneth Sheldon of Ilwaco, 72/72, 144, the entire southwest district struggled. Elliot shot 85/86 to finish 18th. Members of the Naselle Comet Track and Field Squad had a good trip to the state Class 1B Track and Field meet at Cheney last week and brought home six medals. To medal, athletes must place eighth or higher in an event.
