The Freshman class of Wahkiakum High School wanted to create a fundraiser for their class as well as create something special for the community. Their idea was to hold a Father Daughter Dance and Dessert. The event is open to K-5th graders, and they hope in the future, to add the rest of the school. Road construction may slow traffic west of Cathlamet sometime this year, when the Washington State Department of Transportation installs two replacement culverts across SR 4 on the east side of the Elochoman River bridge. The project is expected to go to bid in the spring, with construction occurring between July and September. On Friday, December 13, Naselle High School had six teams compete at the ESD 113 knowledge bowl meet at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen. Yes, it was cold. Some of our pipes froze, but with a little patience and time, we eventually have water again. Just like camping for a day or two. We did make sure that the animals had fresh water and a warm place to stay, and added a feeder and a heat lamp to the inside of the chicken pen, though they even said “it’s too cold to lay you any eggs.” Now we are back to a little bit of normal behavior. Members of the Sugar & Spice 4-H Club, shown here busy making saffron buns for the Santa Lucia celebration to be held at the Appelo Archives Center this Saturday afternoon. Members learned that the saffron used in the making of the buns comes from the dried stigmas of the Saffron Crocus, thus making it a very expensive spice. Naselle Students in Mrs. Bennett's Middle School English classes recently participated in the Veteran's of Foreign Wars national essay contest entitled "What Patriotism Means to Me." The requirements were an essay 300-400 words in length. The students were judged according to theme development, knowledge of the theme and clarity of ideas. Orchard Mason Bees are highly effective pollinators that are very non-aggressive. They become active in early spring when apple and pear trees begin flowering.
