WET & WINDY--The storm that blew in last Friday was certainly a wet and windy one. No one could attest to that better than the driver of the semi-double trailer truck that blew over on the Astoria Bridge, halting traffic for several hours. It wasn't long before we had a small lake in our field again. It's always amazing to me how fast the ducks and geese hear about the new pond in town! Saturday had us viewing the sun off and on, so that was a nice break from the downpouring rain. Everybody I talked to was ready to head to Hawaii for...
I picked my first bouquet of daffodils yesterday afternoon, so that must be a good sign of things to come, right? I see lots of baby sheep and calves being nurtured by their mothers in the fields along the highway and county roads. Spring must be almost here, new beginnings, new life and hopefully good things ahead for all of us. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley School kids are on Winter Break and will return to classes on Monday. I understand that the new coffee shop at the Appelo Archives center is now open and serving up...

NOT ALL BAD--Our weekend weather wasn't totally bad, although it certainly was not as nice as last Thursday’s wonderful sunshine! For those traveling to basketball games, it was either nice and dry or pouring down rain. While I preferred the dry part, I'm just glad the downpours were usually short-lived. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this week include Rebecca Castillo, Nick Tarabochia, Darrin Dow, Wyatt Parker, Ray Danielsen, Mary Hedman McLaughlin, Morgan Spieth, Sally Nollan, Ursula Jorgensen and Shari Gorman Parker. WET START-- As I write this on Tuesday, it's a pretty drippy day and it looks like we're stuck in the clouds with no view for sure. But considering that the folks back east are viewing feet of snow, I won't be complaining much. The snowstorm is a horrible mess back there, and for those without power, it's truly a disaster. I certainly hope that by the time you read this, things have improved back there. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this week are Vickie Reed, Chuck Parker, Derek Phipps, Connie Shurm, Austin Havens, Roberta...
Happy Valentine’s Day to all the Eagle readers and staff. I feel very blessed this day for the love of family and friends. These past few months have not been the most wonderful of my life but things are certainly looking up. Thank you, everyone, for all your good thoughts, deeds, prayers and encouragement after my husband’s stroke. He is making wonderful progress in his recovery, but we still have a long road ahead. Today, I wish everyone much love and happiness in return for all that you have given us. News from Naselle: There will be no sch...
A noisy delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange Hall last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner is the Fair Board’s biggest fundraising event each year. A hard working group of volunteers planned and staffed this big event and did a fantastic job! The dinner preparation took many hours and then five excellent waitresses worked quickly to get the food hot off the barbeque and stoves out to our guests. Thank-you Sharyl I...
GRAY--Last weekend was a perfect example of how different the weather can be from one day to the next. Saturday started out foggy but we had blue sky and sunshine all day. That was a mood booster for sure! However, by Sunday morning, we had drizzle and heavy cloud cover and it made for a very good day to sit inside and watch football. It was too cold, damp and yucky out there to want to do much outside. Did your favorite team win the Super Bowl? I can't say the first half of the game was too thrilling, unless you were a Ravens fan and...

WET AND GLOOMY--Here we are at the end of the first month of the new year, and as this week begins, it's wet and breezy but at least it's not freezing and blowing and we're not buried in snow, so I'm thankful for that. Cousin Erik Pedersen had taken a trip to Alaska where it was 40 below, so I guess I won't be moaning and groaning about the rain we're having. Unless it causes us to flood, of course! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Kyle Gribskov, Varsha Martin, Jamie Helms, Morgan Castillo, Alyssa Montgomery, KC Ga...

My project for the Wahkiakum County Fair this week was shifting through a big pile of paperwork. It is time to turn in the application for state funding for our fair. Every exhibitor that participated in our 2012 Fair is counted and all exhibitor entries per class are added up. Next a detailed breakdown of the exhibitors; a total of 4-H, Open Youth, FFA or open Adult exhibitors, plus were the exhibitors from our home county or exhibitors from other counties. The next section asks for Capital Improvement projects that...
BITTER COLD--This past week has been an extremely cold one around our area with temperatures in the low 20's and slick roads and icy ponds everywhere. We had folks in the ditch or doing a dance on the highways, so it was definitely a challenging week to stay on the road and to stay warm. Depending on what weather report you listen to, we could be in for some more freezing rain or snow, so be careful out there. For your own safety, please turn on those headlights as foggy conditions make the visibility of your car extremely difficult. SPECIAL...

The new program is still in a rough draft form, the committee is pooling ideas and as soon as we have a detailed program we look forward to advertising for participants. WINTER IS HERE-- When the temperatures start dipping into the 20s around here and the highs are in the 30s, you know that winter has arrived in earnest. Those of us on private water systems wind up being obsessed by the temperatures of the days and evenings. The sunshine can lure you into thinking all is well with your water lines, when in fact, it's just a tease and you can still freeze up if your source is located in a shady, still-frozen parts of the woods. One must take extra care to keep those lines flowing. If you're out of power, a...
Student poems published Poems of three students at Julius A. Wendt Elementary School have been published in a book, "Talented: 2012 Poetry Collection," published last fall by the America Library of Poetry. The students are Ellie Leitz, McKensi Fluckiger and Charlie Ashe. They wrote the poems as fifth graders; they are now in the sixth grade. Here are the poems: The Color Orange by Charlie Ashe The color that the hunters wear while looking for the right bull. The color of that juicy fruit that everyone loves on a hot summer's day. The color of...
WET SNOW?--The big question on everyone's mind is whether or not it is going to snow today (Thursday) as forecasters were saying earlier in the week that we could see more white conditions around the area. I know skiers and folks who love to play in the snow with their 4-wheelers are all excited about it, but as for me, I'll pass! If it does happen to show up, please take extra care and caution when driving around in it, as you may know what you're doing, but that other guy might not! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...
