  • Get ready for Spring Break next week

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Welcome to what really appears to be Spring. I have finally seen my first trilliums and a few of the other small wildflowers beginning to bloom. The hummingbirds are back, as are lots of the other spring arriving birds. The sunshine for the past couple of days makes it definitely feel like spring. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Comets this week include Thursday-home track meet in Naselle at 3:30 p.m.; baseball and fastpitch at Wishkah at 4 p.m.; Monday-fastpitch with Warrenton in Naselle at 4 p.m. Students will be on Spring Break...

The Wahkiakum County Fair will be dedicated to the Grays River Grange this year. There will be an article in the Fair book that will explain to our community about the involvement Grays River Grange had in starting our Fair many years ago. Congratulations to the Grays River Grange, I am so happy that you are receiving this honor this year. A business in our community has donated some items to help support our Fair. Jester Properties is remodeling the Skamokawa Duck Inn. They had to store their tables and chairs somewhere for a few months so int...

  • Pamphlet proves a mine of information

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

BRRR--As I begin this column, we've got snow mixed with rain and temps in the 30s so it's definitely much colder than the end of last week. At least when we see snow falling, we know it's cold and don't get fooled into thinking it's nicer than it really is. As I wrap up this week's column, the snow is really coming down but with a little luck, by the time you read this, the snow will be over and done with for the year! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 15-21 are Connie Bassi, Lucy Bosch, Randy Hoven, Pat Kehrli, Carol...

It was time to fall a few more dangerous trees in the Fairgrounds Park. Commissioner Dan Cothren is falling those old leaning trees for us. They are big and some of them are growing in groups of many trees in a small area. Not a problem for Dan, he is an experienced timber faller. The plan was to get those trees cut down and cut up into firewood before the leaves start forming on the branches. We had a big volunteer crew cleaning up the branches and cutting up firewood last week-end. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the fairgrounds and...

  • PUD energy audit to provide information

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

We’ve had just about everything imaginable this week, weather-wise. Lake Fred (our hayfield) is up, with ice around the edge and snow covering the rest of the field. The ducks are swimming around like it’s a normal routine for them. The smelt must be coming in to the Grays River just west of Duffy’s Tavern, as I have counted as many as 22 bald eagles in the trees overlooking the river. The sea gulls are pretty happy in Gudmundsen’s field as well. News from Naselle: Sports scheduled for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School this week include...

NOT SO SUNNY--Well, as this week begins, I think everyone was looking forward to the forecasted nice day on Sunday, which we assumed meant some sunshine, but as I begin this column, so far we have only seen cloudy weather out here in West Valley and no hint of sunshine at all. Of course, it's not raining, so I guess dry will have to do. However, as I am adding to this on Monday evening, we're getting a light layer of snow coming down, so obviously winter is not going to be leaving before its time is due. Think Spring, which starts March 20! We...

  • PUD considers how to show tax increase

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 8, 2012

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners voted on Tuesday to add an informational line item regarding utility tax on invoices sent to Puget Island Water System ratepayers, but they held off adjusting fees to recoup the cost of a recent increase in the tax the utility pays to the town. The Cathlamet Town Council passed a resolution in December to increase their utility tax from 3 to 6 percent, and the new tax rate went into effect for the billing cycle subsequent to February 18. The town supplies all water for the Puget Island Water System. For residential c...

Once again, it’s time to check in with all the department superintendents that volunteer their help before and during fair. These volunteers keep their exhibitor paperwork organized and their departments or barns looking great each day of the Fair. As I made phone calls and sent out many e-mails, I realized we are so lucky to have this big group of volunteers that give so freely of their time! When you pick up a fair book this year be sure to read through the list of department superintendents, we all owe them many thanks for helping create a...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 8, 2012

Just got an update from Derek Heitsch on his springtime news. He now has 23 new calves and two sets of twins. All are doing well. More to come though. This is a beautiful day for new little ones, as opposed to the miserable day yesterday and the snow and hail overnight. News from Naselle: Naselle High School will host a fantastic variety show on March 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the enjoyment of the entire community. There will be something for everyone. Whether you prefer comedy, singing, skits, acting, dancing, the marimba band or...

  • School variety show set for March 9

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 1, 2012

It looks like a few more snow flakes are in the forecast for this week. It would sure be nice to have more than one sunny day, though. At least then you could finish at least one outdoor project. I guess it wouldn’t be Washington without this kind of weather. Guess I’ll stick around and enjoy whatever comes. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley student and daughter of Lonnie and Kim Eaton, Taylor Eaton took first place in the Long Beach Elks Hoop Shoot in December. She then attended the district competition at Huntington Middle Sch...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Mar 1, 2012

It was a busy week-end at the fairgrounds with lots of horses and people enjoying our big covered arena. 4-H leader Val Rowe and her 4-H Horse Club kids, plus the parents of many of the kids and a few Pacific County Fair Board members came to look over our arena. While the 4-H Club members rode their horses, the parents, board members and I talked about the costs of building an arena like ours. We shared a potluck lunch that was delicious and then the kids saddled up their horses and took turns practicing gaming patterns for a few hours. It...

  • Seeking vendors for July event

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 23, 2012

PRETTY WET--As this calendar week began, Sunday was a nice dry day, but Monday was quite soggy. From the sounds of it, most of the week is due to be wet, so I hope you've kept the boots and umbrellas handy. We can only hope the forecasters are mistaken and things turn out drier than they think they are going to be, as that would be the kind of weather error we'd like! It sounds like snow levels are dropping as well, so if you're headed to the mountains or have to go over a pass, be sure to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. After the...

The first raffle ticket for the Valentine Diamond Dinner grand prize was drawn and set to the side to keep everyone in suspense! Blair Brady and I then drew and announced the winners of the other multiple raffle prizes we had for our guests . The winner of the diamond necklace, a bottle of champagne, a movie, a box of chocolates and a $25 gas card was Carol Ervest! Carol has got to be one of the luckiest people I know! She is one of the Fair’s most dedicated supporters and has been the 4-H Superintendent in the Youth Building during Fair for m...

NOT BAD--We haven't had a lot of sunshine this past week but I guess we should be thankful for the cloudy, drizzly days we have, it could be a lot worse! Yup, spring is almost here. The baby lambs at Georgene Scott’s are romping and jumping happily in the fields on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road. The frogs are still singing merrily, and Derek Heitsch just stopped in to announce the arrival of his first calf of the season. A healthy 102 pound bull. New season, new life. I love spring. News from Naselle: There will be no school on Monday in honor of President’s Day. School will resume on Tuesday. The Naselle-Grays River School Board will hold their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Feb 16, 2012

A very delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner was the new fair board's first fund raising event and the first time many of them had ever worked together. They are a hard working group and I am so impressed with their willingness to take on any job that needs to be staffed. The dinner preparation took many hours and then five excellent waitresses worked quickly to get the food hot off the...

  • Valentine Dinner this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 9, 2012

BEEN NICE--I think the last part of last week and the weekend were definitely mood boosters, as the sun was shining and the birds were chirping and some flowers, like my snowdrops were blooming and it was just great to see the sunshine for more than a day at a time, so it was most enjoyable for sure! I guess I could have done without the wind, which made things a little chillier, but hey, at least we weren't wading through flood waters or digging out of snowbanks like some of the rest of the country was doing. If you happened to be up late on...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Feb 9, 2012

We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. As they shoveled out rocks they found the concrete enclosure was crushed and the pipe was squashed flat. It is fixed now and next time, far in the future I hope, we...

  • Naselle students do well at knowledge bowl

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 9, 2012

Spring will surely be here in the not too distant future. The frogs are singing every night now, a sure sign. It seems like they are a little early this year. The daffodil plants are poking their stalks above the ground and eagles are perched in the trees along the Grays River waiting for an easy meal. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley sports calendar for the coming week: Thursday-first round playoffs for district tournament, girls basketball, to be announced. Call the school for more information; Friday-middle school boys...

  • New exhibit at Redmen Hall

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 2, 2012

ONCE AGAIN--It seems like only yesterday we were beginning the first month of a new year, but lo and behold, here we are in the second month already. So, how are you doing with those new year resolutions? I hope you're having better luck than me, as it seems the snow, the freezing, the rain and a bug have slowed me down and I've just been spinning my wheels when it comes to plans that need to be worked on, but hopefully I'll kick things in high gear this month or at least that's my newest resolution if I ever get to feeling better! While we...
