Redistricting Commission to meet December 13 The Washington State Redistricting Commission will hold their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on December 13 beginning at 10:30 a.m. The commission has been meeting weekly since mid-November and has scheduled weekly special meetings for every Tuesday through the end of the year. The lights at the fairgrounds are beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the people attending were wonderful to visit with. Last weekend's Skamokawa Grange and Fire Department dinner was a sparkling success, hope you attended! Fund raising plans for 2012 are already starting to take shape. It was a fun 4-H Jamboree Event that Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal organized last Saturday at the Wahkiakum High School. The Jamboree was attended by 4-H’ers of all ages and they made decorated cookies, delicious fudge, berry jams and created a multitude of crafts items. The kids completed all the projects by themselves with a little guidance and a tiny bit of help from the 4-H leaders and parent volunteers that attended. Greg Parke to play at Pioneer Church The Pioneer Community Association will present a concert by Skamokawa musician Greg Parke on December 17. Parke uses acoustic and electric guitar to create a one man band sound, playing a wide variety of styles. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. We have one tractor we use throughout the winter that they would move to higher ground if flood waters started threatening to go over the dike surrounding the Fairgrounds. Why...
It didn’t look good for our trip to Oregon last week when we got up on Wednesday morning. Lake Fred (our hay field) had raised its ugly head and the driveway was flooded. Thank goodness for our van, which we ended up driving as the Volvo couldn’t make it through the water. My wonderful sister, Diane, even had to miss a day of work as she couldn’t get her car out. Author to sign books at Advent Soup Supper Naselle Evangelical Lutheran Church will host its annual Advent Soup Supper on December 4, from 4 until 6 p.m. The event, featuring homemade soups and breads, follows the FinnAm Christmas Tour of Homes. NICE ENDING--As last weekend came to an end, we woke to a very frosty world with temperatures in the lower 20s--brr! In spite of the cold, it was very sunny and dry, so that part of it was good. The Wahkiakum County Fair Board would like to say thank you to the many bingo players that attended Turkey Bingo last Friday night. Every game of bingo played was suspenseful and exciting. The winning card holder would receive a turkey or a ham for their bingo. Sometimes there would be two bingos at the same time. Mike Backman, our number caller, would have to do a bingo run off to determine the winner. Now that’s intense bingo! Holiday begins this weekend in Cathlamet The annual Festival of Trees, Lights, Santa and more will take place this Saturday. From 3-7 p.m. the Festival of Trees will be on display to begin voting and bidding at the Bank of the Pacific. Shoppers can also pick up a “Christmas Lane Card” to be stamped by participating businesses. Well, the temperatures have shown us that winter is just about here, along with the high winds last week and snow over the weekend. Our walnut tree still had all of its leaves on Saturday, but after the freeze Saturday night and the wind, it was completely bare of leaves by Sunday afternoon. NOT TOO NICE--Last weekend was definitely a cold, wet and blustery one, which brought down a lot of the leaves that had been making the hillsides so pretty. NOT BAD--As this work week started we had a mostly nice day, as only a few showers came down here and there.
