I received some amazing information last week from Kayrene Gilbertsen. The Wahkiakum County Fair owns a double-ended Columbia River gillnet boat! The boat was built between 1913 and 1916. It has been stored for over 30 years in the Vista Park Port Shop in Skamokawa. Since we now have a gillnet boat, I spent some time reading up on these sturdy fishing boats. The double-ended gillnet boats were designed for fishing in rough water. We all know how quickly the Columbia River can become a white cap terror if you are in a small boat and the tide...

HALF AND HALF--It was a so-so weekend with a soggy Saturday but a suitable Sunday; not exactly a sunny day but at least it wasn't raining, which made some outside work possible. Of course, with this being the last of October, I guess the rain shouldn't be so unexpected. As this work week began the sun was shining but temperatures were dropping, so with temperatures hovering in the 30s, we're definitely feeling that Fall nip in the air! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from October 27-November 2 are Jennifer Hall, Hoby Thacker, Mike...
It’s been a cold and wet October at the Fairgrounds. This type of weather doesn’t bother Search and Rescue (SAR) members or their special dogs. The SAR met at the Fairgrounds last Sunday and held their dog training exercises. I was asked to be a track layer. This was something I didn’t know anything about, so was given instructions by Diane Morrow, the trainer for the six dogs in the SAR program. I was given a walkie talkie, a flag, some pink tape and four objects to hold so my scent was on them. Then I was shown where to start my track layin...
We enjoyed a wonderful unplanned trip to Redmond, Ore. this past weekend and celebrated our daughter’s 45th birthday with her and her family. She and her husband and our son and daughter in law are in the process of brewing beer and hopefully opening their own brewery soon, to be called “Smith Rock Brewery.” I had the pleasure of helping brew a new batch on Saturday. It’s an interesting process, and not as easy as I thought it would be. News from Naselle: The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District is now on Facebook. Bring the family and en...

Bach, will be presented at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. on October 30. A free will offering will benefit the Wahkiakum High School music program as well as the church's music program. The featured artists will be Sylvia Berg Oines a pianist/organist from Seattle and Eva-Mari Vik, clarinetist from Wahkiakum High School. Our Saviour's Lutheran C...
NICE--It's been a pretty decent weekend as we had a drying trend show up that helped brighten everyone's spirits, I bet. I think it also brought out everybody's lawn mowers one more time and hopefully the last. While the day time temperatures were nice, it was in the mid-30s here Saturday night, definitely on the nippy side. While we may be lulled into thinking we've got time to prepare for the winter ahead, I'm thinking we better get with the program as we are into the third week of October, and heading into the fourth. Where is the time going...
Did you cash your fair check yet? Don’t forget! Fair checks have to be cashed before the end of October. I will keep reminding you each week! If you haven’t received your check yet, give me a call. Want to help sponsor next years fair? Donate your fair premium check back to the Fair. Send your check to: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O. Box 1, Skamokawa, WA 98647. Thank you, Frans Eykel for donating your fair premium check back to the fair! This week volunteer Ed Stevens and I worked on the area in the arena where people gather to watch events. All...
It sure is nice to have so much sunshine lately. I might even get the lawn mowed one more time before the rains make it impossible. The chill in the morning and evening air are sure signs of fall making an appearance, but the leaves haven’t really had much of a change in their colors yet. Derek Heitsch has brought some of his cows in to graze on one of our fields for a few days. It’s fun to watch them and not have the responsibility of taking care of them. Does that make me lazy? News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle Comets on the...

WET WET--It looks like we've got a wet week ahead of us with mist, drizzle, light showers, showers or rain in the forecast, which in layman's terms just means wet! We did have part of our weekend fairly dry, so it wasn't too bad. With our damper weather, I know it was time to kick on some heat, so even though the temperatures weren't always that low, the dampness just creeps in your ole bones and they just ache for some warmth! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from October 13-19 are Debbie Chamberlain, Heidi Heywood, Sami McKinley,...

We are starting our Fairgrounds winterization projects! A huge thanks to Ed Stevens, Mark Crary, Barbara Clark and Georgie Billings for moving our big freezers, refrigerators, ice machine, ice cream freezer and stoves out of the food booth and onto the entertainment stage. Our new stage built by Contractor Mark Crary can hold the weight of these appliances because Mark used 2” by 10” floor joists to support the floor. We will hope for a dry winter but we are getting prepared for a wet one. The stage will be the new high and dry home for our...
In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen. They actually had the typed page turned sideways on the screen. Thank goodness our son Carl was here, as I had no idea how to fix that problem. But on the other hand, they sure are cute and they love all the dogs. I guess we’ll keep them. Our hot tub h...
NOT NICE--As this week began, the skies opened up and poured rain upon us! It was something else on Sunday afternoon as we haven't seen it rain that hard in awhile now. From the sounds of it, we're going to be in a wet pattern all week long, so I guess it's time to concede that summer really is over and we'd better prepare ourselves for some stretches of nasty weather. There was a glimmer of hope on the last weather report I saw, as a dry patch is scheduled for Saturday; let's hope we get it. This is the time to prepare ourselves for the...
If you grew up in Wahkiakum County you already know there are lots of elk and deer that live in the mountains and valleys that surround Skamokawa. Hunters, if you need a place to camp, our park is 20 minutes away from South Fork Ridge, where you will probably be hunting. We have camp sites available at the Fairgrounds Park with rest room facilities and a shower. Your camping fees will be used to operate and fund the 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair. Give me a call if you need a campsite. Did you cash your fair check yet? Don’t forget! Fair checks h...
I am now the proud owner of (or maybe owned by) two new kittens. They both come from feral heritage, and were raised and nurtured by a dear friend. Alwen and Isabel are gray and white, long haired with stubby tails and are the most loving kittens I’ve ever seen. As I sit here typing, Alwen is asleep on my right shoulder and Isabel is in my lap curled in a ball. They have only been here in their new home for about two hours, and already have settled in. News from Naselle: Keep up the good work, Naselle Comets. Congratulations on the win last F...
RAIN--We ended last week with some rain and began the week with showers, plain ole rain and some good, gusty winds, which brought down a lot of leaves along the roadways; definitely seemed more like Fall! I'd just about forgotten how miserable it can be tromping around in a parking lot in the rain! The good news out of the rainy stretch was that it sure helped calm down those fire fears, as things were tinder dry out there. From now on, we'll be thoroughly enjoying those upcoming dry days, even though they may be shorter and the evening hours...

WARM WEEKEND--After some rain last weekend, it looks like things are heating up this week and it will feel more like Summer than most of Summer felt. So, when Fall officially starts this Friday, we'll be basking in temperatures in the 80s they say, so it's not time to put away the sun screen quite yet. The rain last weekend didn't make those with outdoor plans too happy, but I'm sure all the plants enjoyed the drink and it helped lower our fire danger in the woods, so it was really a good thing. With time ticking away, that batch of rain we...

HOT ONE--Several days last week were quite toasty, as was half the weekend, so while school started, hunting season began and we are thinking Fall, it felt like Summer had finally shown up and about cooked us all! I'm glad it was cooling off as it was a bit much for some of us, and the poor kids who had to practice and play football in this heat, were certainly not enjoying it. Of course, when it starts raining and blowing, it won't be much fun either. As this work week begins the clouds have moved in and it's about 25 degrees cooler. We may...
NICE STREAK--It seems summer finally arrived, just in time for the kids to go back to school. Football and Fall are heading our way, as the sun has been shining and the temperatures rising. We should be nice all week but computer models are showing us several degrees below the temperatures Portland is expecting and that's fine with me! It looks to be dry and nice for upcoming events, including the "End of the World Rod Run" Saturday in Long Beach. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from September 8-14 are Carla Keilwitz, Amanda Poler,...
