This Saturday the Fairgrounds will be the site of the Derby Dollars for Scholars and Rods & Reels Rod Run event! This is a special fund raising event established to generate funds for student scholarships. The Rods & Reels Car Show will be set up in the Fairgrounds Park and the Dollars for Scholars Sturgeon Derby & Barbecue is located on the Fairgrounds midway area. Last week the plans for the entertainment stage, that the Fair Board would like to have built, were given to Chuck Beyer who manages the Building and Planning for Wahkiakum County. He will redraw the plans so a contractor can look at his blueprints and build the stage at the Fairgrounds. Soon we will have a new entertainment stage! WET START--As this week began, it was a very wet and nasty Sunday, so everyone who had been out working like crazy on Friday and Saturday, got to take a rest on Sunday, as it was not fit for man nor beast out there. Some of us even took this great opportunity to head to the Fair Foundation's chicken and dumpling dinner prepared by Janet Bryan. We not only got a rest from working in the yard but from cooking as well! Naselle Lutheran plans Memorial Day garage sale Naselle Lutheran Church is the site for a large multi-family garage sale during the Memorial Day weekend. Early Saturday morning a group of seven volunteers arrived at the Fairgrounds to complete a painting project. They spent the day painting the inside of the horse barn stalls red and leveling the ground inside of the stalls. At noon the volunteers took a break and were served a gourmet lunch by Lois Wakefield. Lois brought enough food to feed all the volunteers working on the horse barn and everyone else volunteering on the various projects on the Fairgrounds that day. I have heard that rainy weather doesn’t stop people from traveling to rummage sales; I know that this is a true fact now. Even though it was raining so hard it was knocking blossoms off flowers, at 10 a.m. cars started pulling up! They came to shop, visit and look over the projects going on at the Fairgrounds. Golf tournament aims to raise Mule funds A Hall of Fame Golf Tournament is being held at Skyline Golf Course in Cathlamet to raise money for the Wahkiakum High School Sports Fund. Entry fees for the 18 Hole Scramble are $50 per golfer, including green fees and cart; the field is limited to 12 four-person teams with no exceptions. NICE--Once again we had half of a nice weekend, as Saturday saw some sun but there were also rain showers here and there. However, sunshine prevailed all day Sunday. Concerned Wahkiakum County residents will again meeting May 21 at 11 a.m. to discuss the future of the Seal Creek Cemetery at a brown bag lunch at Johnson Park in Rosburg. Participants will discuss the progress of translation of old Finnish records that created the private cemetery company and the present issue, which is the long term upkeep of the cemetery. Entry deadlines are nearing for the 11th Annual Dollars for Scholars Sturgeon Derby and sixth Annual Rods and Reels rod run, which will occur on June 4. Registration forms are due in by May 14 for the sturgeon derby and May 20 for the rod run. Entry forms can be turned in at Naselle Hardware, Cathlamet Chevron, or the Bank of the Pacific Cathlamet Branch. HALF NICE--The first half of the Easter holiday weekend was great as the sun was shining and it even warmed up quite a bit on Saturday; great for the Lion's Club Easter Egg Hunt and for those who were enjoying family gatherings. The Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Easter Bingo was a successful fund raising event! By 6:30 p.m. the multi-purpose room at the grade school was filled with people ready to play bingo. The first number was called, the room turned quiet and all attention was focused on watching bingo cards. Each bingo game winner would take home a big delicious ham or two fresh frozen chickens! SUN!--As this week began, the area saw some sunshine, that was the good part. The bad part was that it was below freezing a couple of nights in our area and other parts of the state. Some even saw snow! It was great to see the sun shining, and I know folks were busy mowing their lawns and washing their cars, but the temperatures sure could have been warmer. With some areas back east expecting over a foot of snow this week and over 200 tornadoes tearing through the south and killing dozens of people last weekend, I guess we shouldn't complain...
DIFFERENT DAYS--As the week began, it was absolutely miserable in West Valley, with rain coming down so hard on Sunday night that I wondered if I should be building an ark! The Two Islands Farm Market is preparing to open for the 2011 season on May 6.
