The Fairgrounds were the site of the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Used Book and Rummage Sale last weekend! We had lots of people stop by and purchase books and other good, useable items that were for sale. It was nice to visit with everyone that stopped by, seemed like a mini-fair get together. We plan on having used book sales and rummage sales at least once a month. Our community has donated items we still need to pick up for our next sale in May and we will also be receiving 20 boxes of good books to sell at this sale. Watch this column...
I have a message for the many people who have inquired about the Silver Buckle Series Game Show. We are planning the Game Series! I will have the three event dates in my Fair column next week. A spring garden plant sale on April 30 will help with garden planning and benefit the St. James Family Center. A wide selection of plants will be available in the center's gym from noon to 3 p.m. including houseplants, ornamentals, perennials, bedding plants, trees, vegetable starts and herbs. Due to further requests, another vegetable starts workshop has been set by WSU Extension. On April 21 at 6 p.m., Cowlitz County Master Gardeners will assist participants in starting fall vegetable plants that only include squash, pumpkins, cantaloupe, watermelons and cucumbers. The auditions for the Missoula Children's Theatre's production of Pinocchio will take place on April 18 at 3:15 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at J.A. Wendt Elementary. There are roles available for students from kindergarten through high school senior, and approximately 50-60 students will be cast to appear in the show alongside the MCT actor/director. The Wahkiakum Fair Foundation had to cancel their Chicken and Dumpling dinner on Sunday, April 10 due to a family emergency of "chef" Janet Bryan. Bryan's brother Gordy Souvenir was injured and in the ICU at a local hospital on Sunday, leaving the Foundation without her to prepare her fantastic chicken and dumplings. Foundation members felt it was best to cancel the dinner rather than struggle through without her. The Foundation plans to reschedule the dinner as soon as feasible. Reports are that Souvenir is out of the hospital at this time....
Breakfast at Applebee’s is being served on April 30, as a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society’s Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Relay For Life. April 30 marks the date for the 35th annual Spring Salad Luncheon held by the Priscilla Circle of the Naselle Lutheran Church. "Farm Fresh," this year's theme, will be used throughout the event, which will feature a garden area with Alfred Simukka's tomato plants totalling well over 500 and other starts to add to Spring planting. Saturday we had a group of 10 volunteers painting the horse barn stalls and poster wall. Horse Barn Superintendent Valerie Antijunti bought blue paint for the poster wall that matches the color of the metal on the outside of the barn. The inside of the stalls were painted red, the color made them look very clean and bright. The Leroy Burns Rock Pit Pond will be open weekends beginning the last weekend of April until the last weekend of May. This year’s Cispus trip for all 8th grade students is being scheduled for May 14-16 and the school is seeking participants and parent chaperones. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is preparing to host the Bald Eagle Days Festival and Wooden Boat Show for the 30th year this summer.
