At the year's final meeting of the Wahkiakum Historical Society, treasurer Julie Fritsch reported that the museum was approximately $28 in the red. "It was a good performance considering that we have not requested any support from the county for a couple of years, using only volunteer help and public donations," said society president Judy Brawn. "If we had sold two more memorial bricks, we would have been in the black." The museum is closed until the spring but bricks may be ordered by calling Brawn at 849-4452 or any board member. The...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was wonderful to get away for a few days, see family, eat too much and get some wonderful news as well. We kind of slip-slided our way to Redmond, Ore. for the holiday as the roads were pretty icy, but made it all in one piece. Our oldest granddaughter, Marlee, became engaged on Friday, and shared the news with us after her boyfriend, Scotty, proposed to her while they were hiking on Smith Rock, just outside of Redmond. They haven’t set a date yet but plan to be married in the summer. It looks l...

BRR--As this week begins, the temperatures dropped to 26 degrees in West Valley and things were frosty white. Actually, the cold and frost hit late Saturday night, and I was just thankful that it didn't get any colder. As Sunday progressed, the snow began to fall and with the cool temperatures, it didn't take it long to start sticking and adding up; not everywhere mind you, but certainly in West Valley! Even in Skamokawa, just two miles west of us, there was not as much snow; we tend to be in the "cold and snow zone" every year, unfortunately!...
My goodness, it’s nearly December, and another year almost gone. Christmas is almost here. This was an unusual beginning for our week. Snow, snow and even a little more snow. An early deadline for the week also throws off the norm. It is really an interesting camp out trying to keep the water pipes from freezing in our motor home. We are actually getting some things done on the home building front though. The framing is nearly done and the roof is covered both upstairs and down with plywood and plastic which means the interior is mostly dry, s...
NOT NICE--As this work week begins, it is cold and wet and nasty looking out there, so a good day to stay in and sit by the fire or, in my case, start typing! November is definitely zipping by and you know what that means: the holidays will soon be upon us! Let's hope we can all keep a grip on what we have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and to spread Christmas cheer each and every day, and not just during the Christmas season, and keep the celebration of New Year's in our hearts all year long, so we can appreciate each new day! SPECIAL...
Naselle and Astoria will play host to author Michael Maryk of Bellingham for readings, discussions, and book signings of his new book “Sunpath.” It is a fictionalized version of 10- year old Aimo, his six-year old sister Anna, and eight-year old cousin Pehr’s hasty evacuation from Finland to Sweden during World War II. In preparation for writing this novel, Maryk spent two years in Sweden interviewing survivors from the “Finska Krigsbarn” (Finnish War Children). During that tempestuous time 75,000+ Finnish children were transported to safety...
News from Naselle: The Naselle Grays River Valley School District held a special Veteran’s Day Celebration to honor our veterans on November 10. Several local veterans were in attendance and were given special recognition. It was a wonderful experience for the students, the community and the honored veterans. We certainly owe them for their service and sacrifice and for our freedom. We also need to remember every day those who are serving now in order to maintain our free nation. Thank you to all the veterans who served past, present and future...

Visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite or bid on the tree they would like to take home. A...
We woke up this morning to four gunshots, not a real surprise as we had hunters on the property. It turned out to be a really successful hunt for Alan Gregory and Mark Zimmerman. They each got their bull elk. Alan’s was a four point plus two eye guard points and Mark’s was a three point plus two eye guards. Congratulations to you both. News from Naselle: PACNET (Pacific County Narcotics Enforcement Task Force) was at school on November 4 for an educational assembly at which time Simon, the PACNET drug dog was introduced. Four deputies, inc...
BACK TO WET AND COLD--As this week begins we've got some sun breaks amongst the cloud bursts, so this Sunday wasn't a total washout. It was a bummer to have those nice Fall days come to an end last week. While it made for a perfect opportunity to do some of that last minute cleaning outside, my efforts only landed me at the doctor's office with a nasty sinus infection which led to a painful ear infection. This caused me to miss many things last weekend, and I felt bad about that, but with the "cure" causing me to almost feel worse than I was...
Five and a quarter inches of rain in the bucket, five inches of water over the driveway, ducks, sea gulls and geese in the lake that is usually a pasture; I think winter is coming. The weatherman says a few days of sun are in store. Maybe we can get some more work done on the house. News from Naselle: Another win for the Naselle Comets with a score of 47-14 against Ocosta. Congratulations Team! Sports coming up this week include: Friday, the 5th- football crossover with Central League; Saturday, the 6th- cross country state meet at Pasco. What...
SO-SO--As we ended one month and began another, the weather was a mixed bag of either sunshine, gorgeous out, like last Friday, or rain, which consumed a good deal of Saturday. Halloween, which was Sunday, began quite nice and didn't cloud up until the latter half of the day. However, November began with a very wet and miserable day, which caused "lakes" to form in a big hurry. If this is a sign of things to come, it looks like we'd better keep a close watch on our creeks and streams as we don't want to be caught unaware in a flood situation....
Rain, rain, and please go away so we can finish the roof over our house. I don’t think Mother Nature is listening. At least we have it covered in heavy plastic waiting to continue when the deluge stops. News from Naselle: Homecoming was celebrated last Friday by the Naselle Comets with a runaway score against North Beach of 50-6. Way to go guys. Sports coming up this week include: Thursday – football at Ocosta at 7 p.m.; Saturday – cross country at Evergreen. Friday is Family Movie Night beginning at 6 p.m. A great way to spend a...
WET AND NASTY--We are still seeing heavy rains and nasty weather, but that was nothing compared to the weekend storms that rolled through the area; not fit for man nor beast out there! I don't remember when we've had that long of a thunder and lightning event, but it was pretty spectacular. With a foot of snow in the mountains already and a couple of more feet expected, you may need to rethink any travel plans across the passes; keep the chains in the trunk and your emergency kit stocked up as well. If this is a sign of the winter to come, it...
My heart goes out to Lois Nelson and the loss she has endured due to her home fire. Fire is devastating not only to property but emotionally as well. I hope she was able to save some of her most personal items, as that seems to be what we miss most, in this type of a loss. Brr! Nights are getting down there temperature wise, but the clear skies are gorgeous. I don’t remember so many nights in a row where you could see the stars so bright. The days have been pretty though, almost too warm in the afternoons. We certainly appreciate Mother N...
NICE AND NIPPY--We have had some nice Fall days lately, as the sun has been shining since last Friday and it's been great. The nippy evenings caught some of us by surprise, as it was below freezing a couple nights and a thick layer of frost sparkled in the morning sunlight; a reminder that winter is on the way. We need to start thinking about getting ourselves prepared for whatever the next few months brings us. Actually, as I write this, the weather man is saying the rains are on the way, so I hope you've enjoyed these past few days of sunshin...
The traditional harvest-time menu of beef stew, cheese bread, beverages and dessert will be served in the Grays River United Methodist Church social hall on Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also available will be crafts, original paintings, clothing and home decorations, plus a second hand shop, and a bake sale. Again this year, takeout meals will be available. A free will donation is asked for the meal. The church is on State Route 4 near milepost 18, on the hill above the Grays River Café. For more...
HALF AND HALF--What a difference a day made in our weekend. On Saturday it was pouring down rain all day, a real soaker, but on Sunday, after a brief bit of morning drizzle, it was time to shed the rain gear and kick off the boots to strut around in sleeveless tops while enjoying a BBQ on the patio. A super nice day! It was a pretty pleasant Monday as well, so it was definitely a good way to start off the week. BACK ON--I am happy to report that I now have my computer back up and going. Whew, that was a long time without that source of...
Summer days and winter nights, at least that’s how it seems to me. The night sky has been brilliant with all the stars shining so brightly, perfect for sitting in the hot tub. Looks like more rain is predicted for later in the week, though. News from Naselle: Games coming up this week for the Naselle sports teams include: Thursday – volleyball in Naselle against Raymond at 5:45 p.m.; Friday – football at PeEll at 7 p.m.; Saturday – cross country Invite at Fort Worden; Tuesday – volleyball at South Bend at 5:45 p.m. G...
