An exhibit of photographs from Northwest photographers Judy Vander Maten and David Lee Myers will be opening at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa on October 23. Both are teachers at local colleges, Vander Maten at Lower Columbia College in Longview and Myers at Clatsop Community College in Astoria. Both have been professional photographers for many years and both have lived in Wahkiakum County. NOT BAD--The evenings are a bit crisp, but the days have been pretty pleasant. HALF NICE--What a difference a day makes! Last Saturday was really nice after a very foggy beginning and it landed itself as the perfect day to mow that ever growing lawn and enjoy a wonderful evening around a firepit after a tasty barbecue with friends. On October 2, Bob Pyle of Grays River will perform a reading and sign copies of his new book Mariposa Road: The First Butterfly Big Year at Redmen Hall from 1 to 3 p.m. Pyle spent all of 2008 searching the US for butterflies and personally tallied 480 species. Students at J.A. Wendt Elementary are collecting old cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. They are hoping to reach their goal target of 500 cell phones, mp3 players and iPods that will help raise money to purchase prepaid calling cards for American troops stationed away from home. Two businesses will compete with the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce in this Friday's Punkin Chunkin' challenge as part of the Oktoberfest celebrations. Terry Barnes Grambo of Financial Network and her husband Roger, and Rob and Diane Stockhouse of Stockhouse's Farm will both build pumpkin chuckers to challenge the Chamber's Funnelator. The Charlotte House Advisory Board is sponsoring the 12th annual Chocolate Extravaganza this Friday at the Hotel Cathlamet. The event runs from 4 - 6:30 p.m. and features local bakers competing for the title of "Most Decadent Dessert." Last year's winner was Susan McClain Kuhn with her Almond Roca. Wahkiakum Youth Football will hold a spaghetti feed on October 8 from 5 till 6:30 p.m. in the Grade School Multipurpose room. WET ONE--As I begin this column this Tuesday morning, it is mighty wet here in West Valley. This took me by surprise after such a beautiful Monday evening which seemed to hold promise of another nice day. LITTLE MOISTURE--While some folks didn't see any rain as this week began, it was definitely wet in the early hours of Sunday and Monday mornings in West Valley. Luckily it dried up fairly quickly on Sunday and while it was a little breezy, it was fairly decent so a lot of that last minute outside work could still be done. On Monday it was much cooler and cloudier with some rain in the morning, dry most of the day but quite wet by early evening. On September 11, an exhibit of quilts by the River City Strippers - a Wahkiakum County based quilters group - will open at Redmen Hall. This will be a celebration of their 10th anniversary as a group, having started with 11 members in February 2000, and now grown to just over 40 quilters. They meet weekly in Cathlamet and have become well known for the Comfort Quilts they make and donate to seriously ill children and adults in local hospitals. They will be showing over 80 pieces of their work from quilts to bags, clothing and smaller items....

BEEN NICE--As this work week began, we got a few clouds and sprinkles but it wasn't too bad, as the sun came out and all signs of wetness soon disappeared. The annual Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on September 11, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Skamokawa Grange next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds. The theme this year is "Wines from Down Under." This is the Friends of Skamokawa's largest fund raiser of the year and is always enjoyed by both locals and visitors. Rob Stockhouse, of Stockhouse Farm will return as the auctioneer. The tickets for this community event are $15 per person, and include wines from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, and Argentina....

ENOUGH HEAT YET?--When the temperature hit 97 degrees at my house last Saturday, I was saying "enough already!" Whew, it was hot! But thankfully, we had some cool evenings and the house cooled down so sleeping was easy. Here at least, we went from 97 to 61 in just a few hours!
