Mules notch undefeated season

February 15, 2007

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team used balanced team play to wrap up an undefeated 19-0 regular season last Friday by choking the Morton Huskies for a 70-54 win.

The Mules shot to an early lead, but the Huskies fought back with good offensive ball movement. The game was tied 37-37 midway through the third quarter when the Mules took control.

With the Huskies focusing on stopping Mule scoring leader Toby David, point guard Travis Bain started penetrating the key; he also hit a couple long shots to open up the Husky defense. Then the Mules started going to center Romeo Savant, and the Mules pulled away, outscoring the Huskies 14-10 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the fourth.

Bain led the Mule scoring with 19 points; Savant, David and Ty Briscoe each had 14; Brandon Ferguson six and Bud Hammon three.

The game was the last home game for the team's nine seniors--Bain, Briscoe, David, Ferguson, Hammon, Savant, Josh Gerlach, Damien Deaton and Brenden McClain.

They celebrated the 20-0 season by singing the school's alma mater for the crowd and cutting down the nets. The Mules sing the school's Alma Mater after defeating the Morton

Huskies 70-54 On February 7, the Mules put away the Toutle Lake Ducks early and rolled to a 69-58 win. The Mules led 24-14 after one quarter and 42-30 at halftime.

The Mules open district play this Saturday, 8 p.m. at Castle Rock. They'll play the winner of Wednesday's game between White Pass and Ocosta.

The winner advances to a Thursday game, 8 p.m., in Chehalis; the loser plays in a loser-out game Monday, 4 p.m., in Montesano.

Two losses knock a team out of the tournament; the top five teams earn berths in the state tournament.
