A project that will result in a safer, smoother driving surface on I-5 in Cowlitz County begins August 9, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). This contract was awarded to Western States Asphalt of Yakima who submitted the winning bid of $2,166,711.

Due to heavy daytime traffic through the project area, a majority of the work will be completed at night. Over the 30-day working period, motorists can expect daytime single lane closures, nighttime double lane closures, and occasional night ramp closures in the project area. Delays up to 20 minutes may occur.

The project will repairs ruts and provide safety improvements to just over 17 lane miles of I-5, from Woodland to Ostrander Creek, north of Kelso. Ruts which are at least one-half inch deep will be repaired. However, rut repair will not take place in areas that will be paved in the next several years. In addition, guardrail installation, pavement markings, rumble strips, and signing work will be completed.

Construction is expected to last through the fall.
