The Wahkiakum Mule basketball team claimed fourth place at the Class 2B Boys Basketball Tournament in Spokane.

The Mules opened with a close 51-47 win over the St. George's Dragons on Wednesday. That pitted them in the quarterfinals against the undefeated Toutle Lake Ducks who had handily defeated the Mules in Central League and Southwest District play. The Mules took control of the game and led until the final minutes when the Ducks scooted ahead and held on at the free throw line to win 56-51.

The Mules followed with a 63-33 throttling of the Lind-Ritzville Broncos in an elimination game on Friday. On Saturday, the Mules took on the Darrington Loggers and used good defense to pound out a 67-49 win.

The team kept the tradition alive: They were the 13th Mule boys team to compete in the state B tournament, and each has brought home a trophy.

Seniors on the team are Kyle Benson, Josh Rongey, Chris Diaz, Ross Lofstrom, Drew Windsor, Hayden Miles, Bobby Helms and Tyler Benson.

Sophomore guard Cody Olsen, son of Mule Coach Bill Olsen, was named to the All-tournament First team by the Spokesman Review newspaper.
