Mule wrestlers win two championships

This past weekend the Mule wrestling team competed in the 23rd annual Rubber Chicken tournament at Kalama High School. The tournament consisted of ten teams from as far north as Kent as well as local area schools. The Mules finished seventh as a team, but still brought home six medals.

The Mules had four wrestlers in the championships. Kevin O’Connor, Joel Fudge, Brady Johns, and Ben Doumit all represented the Mules in the finals. Fudge and Johns were both champions for the Mules.

“Joel and Brady looked great in the finals,” said Mule coach John Hannah. “Their finals matches were the best both of them have looked all year. They just keep improving each week, and this is the time of year that we should start to peak.”

“Kevin and Ben weren’t able to win their championships, but they both made big strides on their way to the finals,” said Hannah. “Ben beat a top quality wrestler who was bigger and stronger than him, but he used technique and his intelligence to win.”

Other placers for the Mules were Jeff Vik who placed third and Ben Miles who placed fifth.

“Jeff and Ben had tougher days than they set goals for, but they finished the day with impressive wins as they rallied to earn the team much needed points,” said Hannah.

Earlier in the week the Mules hosted the other Central B league teams in an exhibition of matches. The Mules competed in 16 matches and won 13 of them.

“It is important to end the year with strong wins, especially if it is against opponents who will have to face us at districts,” said Hannah. “We were really pleased with our senior leadership we had versus our league opponents. Joel Fudge and Stian Vik won impressively, and the rest of our seniors did what they needed to do.”

Jeff Vik was awarded the WIAA 2B Athlete of the Week award for his accomplishments during the week of January 4-10. During that week he had six wins, won the first championship of his career, and the Mules' first championship at the Royal Rumble tournament.

“Jeff had his best week of his career,” Hannah said, “and it is great for him to earn this award.”
