What's Happening at the Fair?

November 26, 2009

It was a turkey bonanza at this year’s Turkey Bingo fund raiser, with lots of Wahkiakum families winning their Thanksgiving dinner. The Backmans outdid themselves, organizing the whole evening and donating the fantastic blu ray and Wii player raffle prizes. Martha and our fair volunteers did an outstanding job, raising over $1,600 for next year’s fair. The fair board and I wish to thank Martha and her family for all their hard work and continued support.

Don’t miss our upcoming Christmas Bazaar happening December 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. within the Youth Building at the fairgrounds. Treat yourself to decadent baked goods and enjoy the carnival games while picking up some great locally produced presents. No matter what your age, you’ll find something fun for everyone at the annual Christmas Carnival & Bazaar. If you’d like to have a table at the Bazaar or organize a fund raiser for your non-profit organization contact the fair office today.

Cash those premium checks! Time is running out, this year’s fair checks must be cashed before December 7. If you’ve lost your check or would like to donate it to next year’s fair, please leave a message on the fair office phone.

Put on your thinking cap and start brainstorming as 2010 is just around the corner and we need a fair theme. This year’s contest is sponsored by the Wahkiakum Fair Friends who have donated a $25 cash prize! Entries can be emailed, mailed, or left via phone. It’s our 102nd fair so get those creative juices flowing and send in your entry today. Entries will be accepted until the January 13 with the winner decided at January fair board meeting.

Attention horse lovers! Horse gate keys are now available. Don’t miss your chance to take advantage of our fantastic new arena. Keys cost $50 and are good for one year. If you’d like to sign up to use the new riding arena call the fair office today.

Would you like to become involved with the planning of our 102nd fair next summer? The fair board is looking for new volunteers and potential members to join one of the new fair committees. Whether it’s entertainment, the princess program or the fair book, this is your chance to help make a difference and let your voice be heard.

Do you want to go to college but need a little help getting there? Why not join the 2010 fair royalty program? The King and/or Queen receive a $500 scholarship. It’s a great way to meet new people and gain experience for your resume. Call or email the fair office for more information.

Please be aware that the Wahkiakum County Fair board meets every month on the second Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the 3rd floor meeting room of the courthouse. The next fair board meeting will take place on December 9. Please note that the public is always welcome to attend.

In an effort to cut costs and stay within our budget the fair office will now be open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds please contact the fair office 360-795-3480 or leave a message on my cell phone 360-355-7743.
