Proclamation: Wahkiakum County 2010

Healthy Community Summit town hall

WHERAS, in the most recent Wahkiakum County Healthy Youth Survey 25% of Wahkiakum County students grade 6 - 12 report when they feel sad or hopeless, they are not sure of adults they can turn to for help;

And WHEREAS, 26% of 6th grade students, and 42% of 8th grade students have already begun to drink alcohol;

And WHEREAS, 31% of 6th graders, 36% of 8th graders, 42% of 10th graders and 25% of 12th graders have reported riding in a car with a driver who has been drinking alcohol;

And WHEREAS, recent research indicates that depression and alcohol are directly related and alcohol has a significant impact on the developing teen brain, impairing the areas that control motor coordination, impulse control, memory, and judgment;

And WHEREAS, alcohol kills more kids than all other drugs combined;

And WHEREAS, teen drinking increases the risk of violent behavior, impaired driving, pregnancy, poor school performance, sexually transmitted diseases, and illicit drug use;

And WHEREAS, kids who drink before age 15 are 5 times more likely to develop alcohol problems as adults;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the County of Wahkiakum encourages all citizens to participate in the Healthy Community Summit town hall that will be held on May 26, 2010 from 5:45 - 8:00 P.M. at the JA Wendt Elementary School Multi-purpose Room.
