Martha Circle Tea made for lovely time

I’m sure everyone is aware that the iconic Rosburg Store is closed as of Monday, the 17th. The only information I have is that it will be closed indefinitely.

What a gorgeous weekend. Now it looks like some more unwelcome rain and stormy weather is on the agenda for the rest of the week.

News from Naselle:

There will be a District track meet on Thursday at Raymond. Girl’s pole vault will start at 3:30 p.m. and the other events will follow. Go Comets!

Are you looking for something fun to do on a weekend or two this summer? Hosts are needed at the Lindgren Cabin on Saturdays or Sundays beginning on June 5 through Labor Day weekend. For more information on volunteering to be a host please contact Elaine Hedlund Wilbanks at 360 430-5777 or e-mail her at ewilbanks@comcast.net.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about some of the Finnish heritage in our community.

I had a call from Pat Vernon earlier this week, and she reminded me that the annual Trash and Treasures sale is coming up this Saturday. The luncheon will consist of soup, bread, dessert and a beverage for a $6 donation. The event will take place at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 14 Parpala Road in Naselle from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lots of items for sale, and a great way to spend the afternoon with friends.

Other news from the Westend:

The Martha’s Circle Tea at the Rosburg Hall last Sunday was a huge success, and lots of fun for everyone. It was also the first time my sister Diane and I have had the opportunity to attend anything like this together. The hall was packed to capacity, and they even had to set up a couple more tables for the many attendees.

The luncheon was superb, the tea excellent and I must say, Mickey Bates did an awesome job right down to the dessert plate presentation. My thanks go out to everyone involved in the program, as it was probably one of the most enjoyable afternoons I have had since moving here.

The Maddox Dancers from Warrenton did a great job with their dance from the musical, “Legally Blond,” which featured several of our local young ladies from Rosburg and Grays River. Several of the girls also participated in a fashion show of both new and old garments.

As an added bonus, we were treated to a fantastic display of antique clothing that Mary Steller had inherited. Other outfits were also on display, including a dress worn by Loin Burkhalter at a school dance, a few years ago. It almost looks like some of the old styles are coming back again.

Last year’s Wahkiakum County Fair Queen, Keeley McGuire, modeled a blue suit worn by her grandmother on her wedding day in the 50s.

Andrea Smaciarz, Lewis/Pacific County Dairy Ambassador (and great-niece of Bob and Lois Burkhalter), modeled several outfits including an off the shoulder dress that she patterned after one worn by the first lady, Michelle Obama. Andrea will compete at the state level next year as Dairy Ambassador, after spending this year earning points by doing speaking engagements and appearances to promote dairy products. She will be attending the Grays River Grange meeting on June 22 as one of her engagements.

Get ready for another awesome breakfast. The American Legion Deep River Post #111 will be holding another all you can eat pancake breakfast on May 29 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $5 for adults and $3 for under 12. You can’t beat that, and the proceeds benefit local vets and our local youth.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will enjoy meat loaf, spuds and gravy, veggies, hot rolls and dessert on the 26th. Check it out, bring a friend.

Rosburg Senior Community Lunches sponsored by CAP also meet at the Rosburg Hall on Tuesday and Thursday. The menus for the coming week include: Thursday, the 20th – honey mustard pork, roasted potatoes, orange Quinoa salad, glazed carrots and chocolate mousse; Tuesday, the 25th – clam chowder, cheddar bay biscuit, tossed salad, sliced peaches and tapioca pudding; Thursday, the 27th – sausage pasta bake, Caesar salad, mixed fruit salad and raspberry bars.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include Jon Dearmore and Spencer Lewis on the 20th; Bill Coop and Irene Blake on the 21st; Hank Nelson on the 22nd; Robin Kent, Alex Bighill, Carol Penttila and Dan Zimmerman on the 23rd; Elizabeth Dalton, Alexander Stenvall, Debbie Lopez and Marc Gacke on the 24th; Linda Cary, Cherilyn Phipps, Manual Lopez, Nikki Hoven and Darian Jacot on the 25th; Makenna Busse and Darrylin Eastham on the 26th. Happy Birthday, everyone. Enjoy that special day.

Happy Anniversary wishes go out to the following couples this week: Rob and Wendy Crozier on the 21st and Bill and Jeanette Grimberg on the 25th.
