What's Happening at the Fair?

September 30, 2010

Book Sale Time! We have a huge collection of used books to sell. We are one of the event destinations of the Columbia River Country Days. This event is coming right up on October 1st and 2nd and is presented by Friends of Extension and Wahkiakum County 4-H. The Fair Board would like you to stop by the fairgrounds on October 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and look over some great reading material. The sale will be held in our new Exotic animal barn. Jean Beerbower will be happy to sell you some of these almost new books for a very reasonable price. Next stop is the Grays River Covered Bridge for Dinner on the bridge at 4:30 p.m., how unique is that! Be sure to get your ticket at the Bank of the Pacific or the WSU Extension Office for this special dinner before they sell out.

At the fairgrounds we have some projects that need immediate attention. The project at the top of our list is the entertainment stage. It needs to be replaced before our next fair. The stage is no longer safe to walk on because of rotten spots and holes in the flooring. The Fair Board members wll be discussing construction ideas and location in the coming months. Have some good ideas? We’d love to hear them.

Did you cash your Fair check yet? Be sure to cash them before October 25!

I need to find a Superintendent for Open Adult Photography and Fine Art for our 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair. This department was formerly Diane Pedersen's, she will be moving before our next fair. Diane has spent many hours painting and redesigning display areas to make it a lot easier to hang paintings and show off exhibitors photos. We will miss this cheerful helpful volunteer and appreciate all the hours she has volunteered before, during and after many fairs. If you are interested please contact Becky at 795-3434 and I can fill in the details and time it takes to do this volunteer superintendent position.

Before Fair I mentioned a need for more sewn clothing items and the seamstresses in our community really responded! At the 2009 Fair we had 16 entries in the open adult sewn category this year we had 62. The dresses, vests, blouses, shorts, aprons, costumes and other apparel you exhibited were beautiful! Thank you.

The Fair Board will be raising funds for improvements needed before our 2011 Fair. All funds from Fair Board fund raising events and all donations go directly toward improving and operating your Fair. Donations are gladly accepted. Send to: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O. Box 1, Skamokawa, WA 98647. We thank our community for their continued support of Fair Board fund raising events and look forward to bringing interesting and fun events to the fairgrounds for all to enjoy.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Board President Becky Ledtke @ 795-3434 or you can call 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is October 13, 7 p.m., T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
