Buzzard's Breath chili contest this Saturday

The Buzzard's Breath Chili Cook-off will be this Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Elochoman Slough Marina.

The event features a chili cooking contest, music by Columbia Crew, raffles, games and a beer garden. Cooking starts at 10 a.m., and tasting starts at 1 p.m. with prizes awarded at the close.

"We have a new challenger from Kalama joining us this year who has qualified for the state chili cook-off," reported Lynda Gerlach, office manager of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce, the event's sponsor.

Some of the other teams up for the challenge include The Renfros who have been working on the winning recipe; team "Chili Fiesta," Joan Harvey Chester and Richard Erickson from The Villa who will be serving "the new, improved Texas Duke Chili," a special recipe from John Wayne himself.

Also on the menu, Gerlach said, are

--"the famous Cajun Jen the Hanigan's Mom's Chili,

--the not so famous Linda Barth and Sandi Rieder "PNW Dead Chicken Chili,

--"Red Hot Realty Chili" from Lower Columbia Realty, and

--"Silverado Chili" by challenger Chuck Silver from Tigard.

"These are just a sampling of the teams competing to be this year's best," Gerlach said.
