Lady Mules knocked from district tournament

February 23, 2012

The Wahkiakum Lady Mules trip to the SW 2B District basketball tournament came to an end February 15 with a 57-53 loss to South Bend.

The Mules opened with an overtime win over the Willapa Valley Vikings on February 9.

The Mules had an eight point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Vikings rallied to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Mules then outscored the Vikings 11-6 for the win.

"We had a let down in the fourth quarter and let them sneak back in," said Mule Coach Tiffany Niemeyer. "The girls kept their composure, though, and held them off in overtime for the win. Our free throws were definitely a factor in this game. We shot 12/21 at the line in the fourth quarter and in overtime. It was nice to have four girls scoring in double figures and two more right behind them."

Brieanna Olsen and Maya Stanley each scored 13 points, and Blaine Land and Sam Boyce each had 12. Haylee Budd scored seven and Brieanna Helms six. Land made 11 rebounds; Budd had eight, Boyce seven and Helms five.

The Mules then met Adna and lost 61-53 on February 11.

"We dug ourselves into a hole in the first quarter and were chasing the 9-0 run they had the entire game," Niemeyer said. "We won the second half, but, unfurtunately, it wasn't enough to win the game. The girls did not give up! They fought hard the entire game."

Brieanna Olsen led the Mule scoring with 17 points; Boyce added 10 points and seven assists. Land had 10 rebounds.
