Art in the Park event seeks artists, vendors

The Columbian Artists Association and the Longview Parks and Recreation are seeking artists to exhibit and sell their fine arts and crafts at their fourth annual juried “Art in the Park” event.

They are also seeking non-profit food vendors. The event is scheduled for August 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Lake Sacajawea Park in Longview.

The focus will be on fine arts and crafts, including woodcarving, pottery, oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, mixed media, china painting, ceramics, jewelry, quilting, photography, stained glass and more.

The show is open to artists 18 years and older. No commercially manufactured items will be allowed. Artists must supply their own display equipment. The cost includes a non-refundable registration fee of $5 and a 10’ x 10’ booth space fee of $25. No commission will be collected from sales. Deadline for receiving entries will be July 31.

Workshop demonstrates how to make rain barrels

On May 30 at 6 p.m., Cowlitz County Master Gardener Jon Griffin will discuss constructing and the benefits of using rain barrels.

Participants will take home a rain barrel from the class. Griffin will discuss how to get started, what to look for when buying a suitable barrel and how to construct a system that will make economic and environmental sense.

Cost of the class is $40 per barrel. Additional rain barrels can be purchased at $2. Pre-registry must be completed by May 25. The class will be held in the Natural Resource Building located on the Cowlitz County fairgrounds in Longview. The workshop is sponsored by Washington State University Extension Master Gardeners.

Elder Options offers CPR class

Elder Options is offering a CPR class on May 22, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The four-hour class covers the new American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers. The class also covers adult, child/infant CPR with automatic external defibrillation (AED), one and two person rescue, and adult, child/infant choking.

Upon completing the class, students will receive a two-year certification ID card. Class size is limited so call early to reserve a seat by calling (360) 636-1000 or (800) 608-2388. Elder Options is located at 872 15th Avenue, Longview, across the street from PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center.

Conservation meeting rescheduled

The regularly scheduled June meetings for Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Conservation Districts will be replaced with a special joint board meeting being held at the Wake Robin Learning Center, 121 Carlon Loop Road in Longview on June 5 at 4 p.m.

Class covers tenant rights, responsibilities

Tenant rights and responsibilities will be the topic of an information night presented by several Longview institutions on June 4.

A presentation and Q&A will be held with attorneys Chelsea Baldwin and Lisa Waldvogel in the Longview Public Library Auditorium from 6-8 p.m.

The presentation will also be translated into Spanish.

Boat offered as raffle prize

The Wahkiakum Historical Society has announced that a boat built by Michael F. Baccallieri of Welcome Slough Boat Works on Puget Island will be the grand prize in their raffle this year.

The vessel was won at the Elochoman Marina's raffle last year by County Commissioner Blair Brady. who has donated it to the Wahkiakum Museum.

The boat will be on display at the Two Islands Farm Market, 59 West Birnie Slough Rd. on Puget Island every Friday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Raffle tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the farm market or at the museum.
