Attention all horse riders that use the fairgrounds arena: The arena will be closed to all riders from May 28 to June 3. We will be cleaning the arena building area as we prepare it for the Dollars for Scholars Event. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We planned a one day used book & rummage sale last weekend but ended up with a three day sale! Lots of campers were staying at Vista Park and people were traveling on the highway pretty steady all three days. We found volunteers to help with the sales who also enjoyed a chance to visit with the many neighbors and friends that stopped by. Big sacks full of books and treasures were sold to locals and visitors at very reasonable prices. Thanks to Maureen Zacher-Bockius, Kathy Elliott, Sarah Czarnecki, Georgie Billings, Bryan Ledtke, Azery Gribskov and Ed Stevens for helping staff our sales. The next sale will be held on June 9 and if there are lots of people in the area again, we will probably be open on June 10 also. Be sure to stop by, we have that hard to find book and one of a kind treasure you have been looking for! Thanks also to Jerry Ledtke, Jim Roberts, Joyce Orr, Kyleen and Pat Conrad for entertaining shoppers and volunteers with many nice acoustic guitar songs during our sales. It was just a great couple of days!

Dollars for Scholars is just two days away! We have been putting in lots of volunteer hours trying to make the Fairgrounds look extra special for this great event. We really needed more volunteers to help Ed and I get everything done on time. Chuck Gaines and his father Nick Gaines showed up ready to help and went right to work. All the weed eaters we have were fired up and off they went in search of tall grass that we didn’t want to be tall anymore.

Our faithful lawn mower broke down on the one day the sun decided to dry the grass out enough to mow. Replacement parts were ordered but we couldn’t get the needed part until Tuesday because of the three day weekend. We borrowed a riding lawn mower owned by Georgie Billings and Ed Stevens. With all the weed eaters buzzing and the borrowed lawn mower cutting acres of grass we were getting this huge job done. A big thank you to Chuck and Nick for the many hours they volunteered last week helping Ed get the fairgrounds looking spiffy and ready for people and their pretty cars. Thanks Ed and Georgie for the generous loan of your riding lawn mower, you kept us moving forward in spite of our break down.

The Fairgrounds garden is planted! We will be growing cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini squash, onions, three types of potatoes, bell peppers, big boy tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, chives, broccoli and bright lights swiss chard. If anyone has a giant pumpkin plant they would like to donate to the fairs garden give me a call. It would be interesting to watch one of those big pumpkins grow up to a 200 pound giant. I think lots of pumpkin pies would be made for our future fund raisers!

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Advisory Board meeting will be held on June 13 at 7 p.m. at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
