What's Happening at the Fair?

October 4, 2012

Fair Premium checks will be issued this week and delivered to your mail box soon. Please cash your check as soon as you receive it!

Missing some eye glasses? Could you have left them at the fairgrounds during Fair time? As we were straightening up the Fairgrounds buildings we have collected three pairs of eye glasses. Please call the fairgrounds if you think a pair might be yours.

Naidie Everdell wanted a few special prizes to be awarded along with the ribbons exhibitors received this year in the Cavy and Exotic Barn. After consulting with me, she went to The Petworks, S&S Liquidators and The Pawnshop & More in Longview. Each business donated some very nice items to be awarded to our exhibitors. A big thank you to each business for their generous donations to the Wahkiakum County Fair!

Attention horse riders. The Fairgrounds arena will be closed on October 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to all horse riding as the Columbia River Country Days 4-H county-wide celebration will be in progress.

Please do stop by the fairgrounds on October 6, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for information about 4-H programs and to watch live animal demonstrations. Local 4-Hers will be available to talk with you about their 4-H projects during the hours of the event.

It’s time to think about a fair theme for the 2013 Fair. The fairgrounds will be decorated to fit the theme that is selected. Email your theme ideas to wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net. In early 2013 we will be choosing the fair theme, if we pick the one you submitted, you will receive two fair passes and two Wahkiakum County Fair T-shirts. Last year’s theme was Hay Bales & Pig Tails. You can send me one or a hundred theme ideas!

We are starting our fairgrounds winterization projects! Which means we have to move our big freezers, refrigerators, ice machine, ice cream freezer and stoves out of the food booth and onto the entertainment stage. This might be a bit tricky with the new bleachers sitting where they are. We will hope for a dry winter but we are getting prepared for a wet one. The stage will be the high and dry home for our appliances until springtime.

If you have some community service hours you need to complete, we could use your help at the fairgrounds. We will be scheduling work days for the next few weeks so give me a call.

On November 16 we will hold the Wahkiakum County Fair Board’s Turkey Bingo. This is a fun night for all ages and you just might win your Thanksgiving turkey at the bingo. Keep reading this column for more details each week.

The fairgrounds are open for limited hours in October. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371, or you can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is October 10, 7 p.m., in the T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is welcome to attend.
