Lady Mules dump South Bend, lose two more

December 20, 2012

The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team won one of three games this week.

The Mules travelled to Morton/White Pass on Friday for league play. Only shooting 30 percent and out-rebounded, they fell to MWP with a score of 59-42.

Hailey Quigley led Mule scorers with 12 points. Tori Wegdahl scored nine, Maya Stanley six, Sam Boyce five, Haylee Budd and Kaylee Bryant each scored four, Baylee Osen had three and Madison LaBerge had one.

“Hailey Quigley and Tori Wegdahl both came off the bench and really provided a spark for us on both sides of the ball,” said Coach Rob Garrett. “We have to learn how to play a more physical style of basketball and still be able to execute under pressure. Our girls have improved each day and we just have to keep working hard and stay positive and eventually it will all come together.”

On Monday, the Lady Mules were able to turn things around in an away game with a win against South Bend. Shooting improved to 42 percent and the Mules outscored South Bend 62-45.

Olsen scored 18 points, Boyce scored 16 and Stanley followed with 14. Quigley scored seven, Bryant and Wegdahl each scored two and Budd put in three while pulling down 10 rebounds. Stanley also had four steals and five assists.

“It was a great all around team effort. Everyone really did their part tonight, the girls relied on their teammates to get them open looks and once we had the open shot, they did a great job of knocking them down. We came out strong and never let up. It was really nice to see the girls put everything together and play with confidence,” said Coach Garrett.

On December 12, the Mules fell to the visiting Pe Ell Trojans. Pe Ell jumped ahead 8-0 in the first 12 seconds, and the Trojans' team speed bothered the Mules all game. Pe Ell led 20-7 after one quarter. The Mules played tough in the second and third quarters and cut the lead to 10 points at one point, but they couldn't catch the Trojans down the stretch.

Olsen led the Mule scoring with 14 points. Boyce had 13, Bryant five, Budd four, Stanley three and Wegdahl one.

Bryant grabbed 10 rebounds; Boyce had seven. Stanley made three assists, and Olsen had three steals.

The Mules visited Onalaska yesterday (Wednesday). They host the Naselle Comettes, varsity only, at 7 p.m. December 27 for the KM Trophy game.
