Wahkiakum Mule Golf

March 28, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule golf team started the 2013 season March 14 with a record setting four ball total of 159, eclipsing last year's record of 164 by five strokes.

Three Rivers Christian finished second at 199, and Adna incomplete because they only had three players.

Mule senior Brysen Coleman earned "Medalist" honors shooting a personal match play best of 37, and junior Austin Good shot 38 for second place.

Tying for third were senior Brook Calvert and sophomore Elliot Haney at 42. Junior Zach Calvert shot 43, and senior Bradley Peek shot 40. Peek's score of 40 did not count in the team match because he was playing in the sixth place for the Mules, and only the best four scores of first five playing positions can count in a team total.

Also playing were Eli McElroy 55 and Maya Stanley 74 playing in her first nine hole match ever.

Head coach Bill Olsen had the players ready, making them compete for a position on the team during practice, with each player knowing that only five players count in the weekly matches. All six spots do compete for team points in district and state tournaments.

Three Rivers' Logan Woods, who finished 10th place in the 2012 state championships, led his team with a 42.

Coaching the 2013 Mules are Bill Olsen, Cody Olsen and Nick Vavoudis.

The Mules golf team extended their interleague golf record to 4-0 March 21 with a 193 to 237, 44 strokes, victory over Three Rivers Christian at North Beach on March 21. Host North Beach High scored 272.

Haney led the Mule Train, finishing second by one stroke with a 45 in horrible weather conditions that included sleet, hail, rain and 30 mph winds for most of the match.

Good finished third with a 47. Also scoring for the Mules were Coleman 48, Peek 53, Zach Calvert 56 and McElroy 69.

Finishing first in a girls match was junior Maya Stanley, 59. None of the three teams had enough girls to field a team score.

On Monday, the Mules extended their interleague match record to 6-0 at Three Rivers Golf Course with a four-man score of 181 to 202 for host Three Rivers Christian and 207 for Northwest Christian of Lacy.

Tying for medalist were the Mules Haney and Good with nine-hole scores of 43. Finishing fourth was senior Bradley Peak 45. Coleman shot 50, Zach Calvert 51 , Brook Calvert 52, McElroy 57 and Stanley 64.

The Mules' next match is at Skyline Golf Course today (Thursday) versus NW Christian, South Bend, Raymond and Willapa Valley High Schools.
