School board okays new Financial Algebra

The School Board met Tuesday, May 21, to discuss regular monthly business. Board Members Tina Schubert, Michelle Budd and Lee Tischer, as well as Principals Theresa Libby, Stephanie Leitz and Superintendent Bob Garrett were on hand.

School board members approved the adoption of a new textbook for the math curriculum, Financial Algebra, as an alternative to Algebra II.

They also approved continuing membership for both Wahkiakum High School and John C. Thomas Middle School to WIAA, thus “delegating authority to WIAA to regulate interschool activities consistent with the rules and regulations of WIAA for the 2013-2014 school.”

Principals Leitz and Libby presented feedback regarding the program of collaboration implemented with staff this year. Teachers were excited about the changes and wanted to continue next year with the program.

Libby reported that because of Linda Hartung’s retirement from Health and Human Services, the CISPUS program for 8th graders was in the air. The Elementary and Middle School will be conducting lockdown and shelter in place drills in June after all state testing is completed. ASB Elections are finalized with new student leaders selected for the 2013-2014 school year. The 8th grade Moving Up Ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 13 in the Middle school gym and the kindergarten promotions will be at 10:30 a.m. that Thursday as well.

It’s Anti-Bully Week for the Middle and High school students. Renae Hauff, Susan Schillios and ASB officers will show the movie Mean Stinks during 6th period all week, followed by discussion. The Charlotte House will be showing Bully, a PG-13 movie at the high school this Thursday. Middle and High school families are encouraged to attend.

Garrett said that it had been a “tough year” for enrollment, but it was on the rise as the school year was ending.

Vouchers and payroll were approved and the meeting was closed for an Executive Session.

Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 20.
