Lady Mules lose to Toutle Lake at district

After reaching the semifinals in the Southwest 2B District Basketball Tournament, the Wahkiakum Lady Mules fell into the consolation bracket and play Pe Ell today (Thursday), 8 p.m., in Rochester for a berth in the regional playoffs.

The Lady Mules faced Winlock in round one of district play last Wednesday and came away with a 49-31 win, moving them into second round play against Raymond.

Baylee Olsen had a double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. She also had one assist, one steal and two blocks. Freshman Peyton Souvenir had a big night with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Maya Stanley scored eight points and had one rebound, one assist and one steal. Sam Boyce added seven points, pulled down one rebound, and had six assists and five steals. Tyra Elliott had two points and seven rebounds, Kaylee Bryant had three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Jessica Thomas had four rebounds and one assist.

On Saturday, the Lady Mules easily defeated the Pacific League’s number two team, the Raymond Seagulls, 51-29.

Olsen once again led scorers with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, one steal and three blocks. Bryant added 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Boyce scored 10 points and had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Elliott added four points and four rebounds. Stanley had two points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Tori Wegdahl, who had been cleared to play after a recent ankle injury, scored two points, had four rebounds and one steal. Grace Peacock added two points and one assist. Souvenir had two points, nine rebounds, two assists and one block.

On Tuesday night, in semifinal play, the Lady Mules faced the undefeated Toutle Lake team to whom the Lady Mules had already lost twice this season. The Lady Mules lost again, 60-30.

Boyce led Mule scoring with nine points. She also had two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Stanley added six points, one rebound, three assists and two steals. Olsen had six points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Wegdahl scored five and had four rebounds and one steal. Bryant added four points and six rebounds and one assist. Thomas had one rebound, Marissa Longtain had one rebound. Souvenir had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The Lady Mules shot 63 percent from the free throw line and 17 percent from the floor.

“Toutle Lake played well,” Coach Rob Garrett said. “They are a tough team. The good news for us is that it doesn’t matter how much you lose by. Everything we want to do this year is still on the table. We need to bounce back quick, take care of business on Thursday and Saturday and then just keep getting better from there.”

The Lady Mules play Pe Ell on Thursday in Rochester at 8 p.m. The winner will be guaranteed a spot in regional play and will battle for third and fourth place at district on Saturday. The loser will play on Saturday as well, to compete for one more open spot at regionals.
