Spaghetti feed this weekend, super sale next at Johnson Park

March 12, 2014

I hope everyone kept their feet dry last weekend after the amount of rain and wind we ended up with. Our son and his girlfriend were here for the weekend but made an early exit on Saturday night in order to get out before we were flooded in. It didn’t last very long but was sure fast coming in. Looks like more silt building up in the pastures, and more pot holes to fill.

Tickets are $10 each for all you can eat spaghetti with salad, bread and beverage. Tickets are being sold in advance from board members, in the Grays River Valley Library/Community Computer Center, at the Rosburg Store or by calling 465-2310. As an update to last week’s column tickets will also be sold at the door.

Some very nice raffle prizes will be available at the dinner including a beautiful, natural stone necklace and earring set donated by Becky Ledke, several other pieces of jewelry, a lovely gift basket, a hand crocheted afghan, tools and several other items. Raffle tickets will be sold at the event or you can purchase them in the Grays River Valley Library at the center.

The E-Bay class that was held in the Grays River Valley Center last week was quite a success. Lots of folks are now e-bay savvy. Thank you Ramona Collver for the informative and free class.

I also have an important update to the Community In-door Super Sale that will be taking place in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on March 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Originally, the event was going to be a few neighbors getting together for a garage/yard sale, but it grew to the point of needing a larger venue, so the folks decided to rent the cafeteria in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park It now looks like the entire building will be utilized and the private sponsors will donate a portion of the proceeds to the center. My comment last week saying that GRVC was not the beneficiary of this event was premature. We hope you will attend this sale and give some feedback to us about possibly making this an annual or bi-annual event for the Center.

Included in the sale items available are fishing gear, tools, antiques, new, used and repurposed items being sold by private parties who have rented tables for the event. There will also be food, beverages and baked goods from the ladies of the Grays River Untied Methodist Church and Bryon Parrino from Naselle Massage Clinic giving massages.

Thank you to Cheryl Dutcher and Kathy Hamilton for spearheading this idea and the event itself. We appreciate all your efforts and your willingness to do good things for our little corner of the world.

This week’s Free Friday Night Movie in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park movie synopsis: “The saga continues in this sequel that finds a revolution brewing as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark take a ‘victor’s tour' of the districts, and President Snow plots their downfall during preparations for the Quarter Quell. The Quarter Quell only occurs every 25 years in celebration of the Capitol’s victory over the districts. Hoping to put an end to the growing threat of rebellion, President Snow announces that the Quell’s tributes will come from the existing pool of victors—guaranteeing Katniss a place in the arena. Though Katniss vows to keep Peeta safe even if it means sacrificing her own life, her fellow tributes have a different plan.” This movie is rated PG-13 and begins a 7 p.m.

Unfortunately, we are unable to post the name of each week’s movie, due to restrictions on our license to show the movies. We can give a synopsis, without naming the actors or the title anywhere but in the Grays River Valley Center. If you call the Grays River Valley Library, we can tell you what it is, but no posters or social media are allowed.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a delicious home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

On Thursdays the senior meal is provided through the sponsorship of CAP, and is also served at the Rosburg Hall. Lunches are served in both venues at noon. Why not take the time to check these two programs out and meet with your friends and neighbors for some social time?

I found my first trillium on Monday as I walked the dogs in the woods. That is always my true harbinger of spring, and was one of my Mom’s favorite flowers. Can these plants be transplanted? Though I have a “black thumb,” I might give it a try, and do they bloom again if you pick the flower? As many of you know, I’m not a gardener, but I do like to see the beauty of nature around me, especially in the rebirth of spring.
