Brandon Budd scores for the Wahkiakum Mules early in the third quarter as the Mules topped Toutle Lake 38-6.

The Wahkiakum Mule football team opened the 2014 season with a 36-6 win over the visiting Toutle Lake Ducks on Sept. 5.

Quarterback Gunnar Blix and running back Brandon Budd spearheaded the Mules. Blix passed for three touchdowns and ran another, and Budd scored three times, including a 20-yard return of a Toutle Lake Pass. Budd also opened the second half by ripping the ball out of the hands of a Duck running back and setting up a Mule touchdown.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter, but the Mule defense kept them under control after that point.

The Mules head to Napavine next Friday.

Editor's note: The first version of this story contained an incorrect score; it's what the scoreboard said, but it was two points too high.

When Mule linemen gave quarterback Gunnar Blix good pass protection, Blix picked apart Toutle Lake's defense for three touchdown passes.
