Bids are in to fix the decaying grandstand at Wahkiakum High School, and on Tuesday at a special meeting of the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors, Tim Hanigan, Shawn Merz and Michelle Budd voted to set a cap for repairs at $20,000, thus allowing administrators to move forward with restoration.

“In my opinion it’s not to become less expensive in the future,” Hanigan said.

“I think we need a fix,” Theresa Libby, principal for the elementary school and junior high said. “I think that’s an area that has a lot of support in the community, who like to come out for Friday night football games.”

Maintenance Supervisor Mike Wright’s goal is to have the project completed by October 1.

“It should be completed within two weeks of the time that Bob (Garrett) and I get a contract signed with the contractor who wins the awarding bid,” Wright said.

With the school district’s reserves at an all time low, the school board hopes that members of the community will step in with donations to off set the cost. Hanigan reached into his own pocket and made the first donation, $100.

School board members Sue O’Connor and Tina Schubert did not attend the meeting.
