Mules sweep Cards in doubleheaders

 


The Wahkiakum Mules baseball and softball teams faced Winlock on Friday in double headers and won all their games.

The baseball team won their first game 11-0. James Anderson threw a no hitter in the first game, striking out five.

At bat, Joey Moore went 1-2 and Luke Brown was 1-1, driving in two runs. Zac Brown went 2-4 and had three RBI's. Hank Ferguson went 1-2 and drove in a run. Casey Wilson was 1-3 and Jacob Childers went 1-1.

The Mules won their second game in five innings, 15-0. Zac Brown pitched three innings, striking out six. Luke Brown pitched two and got the save, striking out four with no hits.

Moore was 2-2 and hit a triple. Luke Brown went 2-3 and drove in a run. Zac Brown was 1-2 with two RBI's, Anderson was 2-4 with two RBI's and Ferguson went 2-3 with two RBI's. Wilson was 2-4 at bat.

“Overall, the pitchers did a great job,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “They were dialed in with good defense behind them.”

In the first game of Mules softball, the team beat Winlock in five innings, 11-0. Marissa Baker pitched her first varsity game, throwing all five innings and earning the win.

Senior catcher Sam Boyce went 4-4 and hit the cycle. She had two runs and three RBI's. Morgan Elliott was 3-4 at bat with three runs and two RBI's. Tori Wegdahl went 2-3, had two runs and drove in one run. Kennedi LaBerge went 2-3 at bat.

“Sam played a nice game behind the plate,” Coach Rob Garrett said. “She kept everything in front of her and had throw downs to first and third. Maddie Mace had a good defensive game at short stop. Marissa had a great first game from the mound and the whole team played well.”

In game two, the Mules beat the Cardinals 13-11 in extra innings. Baker relieved pitcher Tori Wegdahl in the fifth inning and gave up seven runs, and Winlock took the lead 6-10. Wegdahl returned to the game and gave up one more run while Wahkiakum stepped up offensively to regain the lead and take the win.

Elliott was 3-4 at bat with three runs and two RBI's. Boyce went 4-4 with four runs and two RBI's. Wegdahl was 2-5 and drove in five runs. Jessica Thomas was 1-3 and score two runs. LaBerge was 1-3 with one run and one RBI.

“The middle and end of the line up did a great job during the sixth inning,” Garrett said. “They were able to score five runs and take the lead. Kennedi, Rayanna, Jessica and Marissa did a great job stepping up. Tori had to come back in the game in a pressure situation and she handled it. It was great experience for the girls and I’m proud of them.”

Toutle Lake baseball and softball teams came to town on Wednesday for double headers, but game reports were not available by press time.
