The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team began district play on Saturday with a win against Northwest Christian in a loser out opening round. Later that afternoon, the Mules faced Toledo and lost, sending the Mules into the loser's bracket. On Tuesday, the boys were scheduled to play Life Christian in Adna, but the game was postponed until Wednesday, due to rain.

On Saturday against NWC, Terris Record started on the mound for the Mules and pitched two innings. He struck out five and had one earned run. James Anderson took over in the third and pitched four innings. He struck out six and had two earned runs. The Mules won 6-3.

Offensively, Zac Brown went 2-3 at bat, hitting a double and driving in a run. Luke Brown was 2-4 with an RBI and two singles. Record was 2-4 with an RBI and two singles and Brandon Budd went 1-3 with a single and an RBI. Hank Ferguson hit a double and went 1-4 at bat and James Anderson was 1-3 with a single.

Z. Brown pitched all six innings in the second game of the day, this time against Toledo. He struck out three and had nine earned runs. The Mules lost a heartbreaker, 9-8.

Joey Moore was 3-3 at bat with a double, two singles and an RBI. L. Brown went 3-4 with a double and drove in two runs. Z. Brown was 2-4 with three RBI, James Anderson went 2-4 and Casey Wilson was 1-4 with an RBI.

"Boys battled and really showed a lot of character," Coach Niemeyer said. "I was really proud of the battle and it was a lot of fun."

The Lady Mules softball team faced Ilwaco on Wednesday, weather permitting, and scores were not available by press time. District play for softball begins May 18.
